Depicting Math

Suggestions for Depicting Science, Engineering, and Technology... AND MATH!

Most young people are not aware of the implications math has on daily life. Even simple mentions of real-world applications of math in productions can intrigue your audience with something they may not have seen before spurring conversations and understanding about these topics. Consider these suggestions when creating your storylines:

Instead of allowing your characters to fall back on being simply ‘not good at math’ showcase the opportunities and success that can be achieved by those that take up the challenge and see the possibilities in the problems.

Consider ways to show the link between math and the successful accomplishment of everyday activities, like mentioning fractions or ratios in a cooking/kitchen scene, or even not so everyday ones like measurements and proportions in a forensics lab scene.

Think about ways you can explore and portray the ease of using math in regular conversation or action. This may involve setting a scene in a math classroom or having an interaction between characters where a mathematical problem is solved.

When showcasing new research, attempt to portray a character’s use of math as a part of the research process and the reality that individuals working in these fields are changing the world and shaping the way we live our daily lives.

EIC's Skylar Jackson, External Communications and Program Director, will be moderating the Super Session discussion “We Don’t Hate Math: Closing the Gender Gap” on June 18th beginning at 9:45am CDT. The distinguished panel speakers represent leading female role models including L'Oreal Paris' Woman of Worth, Dr. Erika Ebbel Angle, Founder of Science from Scientists; Jully Burau, Vehicle Chief Engineer for Full Size Trucks at General Motors who is credited with developing GM's first airbag program, brake system development and interior engineering; Dr. Maria Zuber, Vice President for Research and E.A. Griswold Professor of Geophysics at MIT; and Darlene Miller, owner and CEO of Permac Industries, a precision machining company custom manufacturing parts for industries worldwide.

As EIC originally assessed the public perception of Science, Engineering, Technology, and Math when developing our Ready on the SET and...Action! initiative, we discovered that, generally speaking, math is considered a barrier to career pursuits. Young people need to be encouraged to see the importance of math in daily life and inspired to use the power of numbers to innovate their futures. Math tends to have an image problem. Who better to reinvent the character and integrity of math as an integral part of current business and future progress than Hollywood.

By including science, engineering, technology, and math in storylines and developing characters that portray the impact of pursuing a career in these fields, we can shine a spotlight on mathematics among young audiences.

Danica McKellar & Callie Hobkirk

Danica McKellar

Danica McKellar, actress and education advocate, is author of GIRLS GET CURVES: GEOMETRY TAKES SHAPE, MATH DOESN'T SUCK, KISS MY MATH, and HOT X: ALGEBRA EXPOSED. She may be known for her role as Winnie Cooper on The Wonder Years and or for her guest starring role on The Big Bang Theory, but Danica is also a summa cum laude graduate of UCLA with a degree in mathematics; co-authoring a mathematical proof known as The Chayes-McKellar-Winn Theorem. Over the years, she has used her recognizable status as a means of inspiring young people, especially women.

National American Miss
Callie Hobkirk

One young woman inspired by mathematics and being both beautiful and brainy, like Danica, is National American Miss Callie Hobkirk. Callie told EIC in a recent interview: "Girls need to challenge themselves don't be afraid to take harder classes it might be difficult but that's what's important. You have to be able to grow and expand as a person… [for example] I want to be a nurse when I grow up. Nursing has everything to do with science and math. I'm going to constantly be dealing with different strands of viruses, it's very important. There's a shift of females taking over, challenging themselves, and becoming who they should be. And in those classes, like calculus, there's more female students than males which I'm super thrilled to see because it's all about empowering young women."

Did you know? These men and women got to where they are because of MATH!
Benjamin Banneker invented the first clock.		Dr. Patricia Bath invented a mathematical equation for predicting cancer cell growth.	Dr. Philip Emeagwali did more than 100 math problems a day when he was young. As a young adult he received a scholarship for college and later on in his career, built the fastest computer.
