Welcome Back to NICHQ News!

Hello, friends of NICHQ! It has been a few months since our last communication. We’re kicking off this new monthly e-newsletter to keep you up-to-date on all the exciting innovations and projects we’re working on. NICHQ continues to be a very active and vibrant organization with many new people, many new projects, and many new opportunities to improve children’s healthcare quality. We’re glad to have you with us!

A New Level of Innovation in Our Quality Improvement Work

“Things at NICHQ are buzzing and humming as never before,” says NICHQ’s CEO Charlie Homer in his new monthly President's Message. Dr. Homer describes a new level of innovation and ambition in many of NICHQ’s new projects – that is, managing the "white space" between organizations to address long-standing gaps in coordination and care across groups.

My How We’ve Grown!

There’s a renewed energy at NICHQ these days – much of which emanates from so many talented new staff members. Our staff now stands at over 25 people, most of whom joined NICHQ within the last year. We are also excited to welcome several new members to our Board of Directors, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to NICHQ’s governing body.

How Do Your State and County Measure Up?

We all know that the prevalence of obesity is growing in the United States, but there are significant variations from state to state – and even county to county. Now for the first time, NICHQ is making available state-by-state and county-by-county obesity factsheets that present regional data regarding obesity and the environmental and behavioral factors that influence health. These one-of-a-kind resources, which are provided through the Be Our Voice project, provide unique opportunities to pinpoint areas of focus and drive local policy decisions.

Promoting Partnerships for Healthy Weight

To help address the obesity epidemic, NICHQ is thrilled to be leading a consortium of organizations to establish a national Prevention Center that will guide and support teams across the nation in helping communities and families maintain or achieve healthy weight. This unique program will build partnerships between health care, public health, and community-based organizations to promote healthy weight and health equity in communities throughout the nation.

Improving Sickle Cell Healthcare

NICHQ is honored to have been chosen to be the National Coordinating Center for a program to improve care and outcomes for individuals with Sickle Cell Disease, in concert with the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America and the Boston Medical Center. The program, called WISCH (Working to Improve Sickle Cell Healthcare), will lead a Hemoglobinopathy Learning Collaborative, spearhead the creation of a standard set of key recommendations for care and core measures to track performance, and create the first-of-its-kind national clinical registry system for Sickle Cell Disease.
