AFP-HR Vision Statement

To be recognized as the premier fundraising resource for professionals to learn, collaborate and grow together for a vibrant Hampton Roads community.

President's Letter
Head Shot - 2017 Kenda Council 2

Greetings AFP-Hampton Roads Chapter Members,

We are certainly living in unprecedented times. Thank you for all you continue to do to promote acts of kindness, goodwill and philanthropy in Hampton Roads each and every day. We need this now, more than ever.

I know you’ll join me in thanking our Programs Committee for hosting much-needed “Coffee Break” educational sessions throughout the month of May for our members. These informal, small group (no more than 10), information sharing sessions were free to AFP-HR members and featured topics like: “Virtual Tour of the Virginia Zoo,” “Make Your Case,” “Anything but COVID,” “Post-COVID,” “Some Day Events,” “Recipes for Strong Donor Relations During Uncertain Times (you already have the ingredients!),” and “Life is All About Plan B.” We’ve received positive feedback from these sessions.

We are excited to invite you to join us for The Curtis Group’s presentation of “Giving USA” for our AFP-HR Chapter. Save the date for Tuesday, June 23, 2020 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. for this free, zoom session. Please register to attend this very popular session.

We are promoting AFP’s Annual Giving Campaign called the “Be the Cause Campaign.” More information on the campaign can be found within the newsletter. We are at 100% Board giving and I encourage you to make a gift of $5, $10, $20 or more - whatever you can do to help AFP. Click Here to make your donation. Remember, a portion of what we donate comes back to our chapter to help us host programs for our chapter!

We are currently planning the Fundraising Leadership Symposium scheduled to take place in August. Additionally, I wanted to make you aware that due to COVID-19, we will not be hosting our annual National Philanthropy Day Luncheon Celebration this year. Our National Philanthropy Day Committee is currently making alternative plans to celebrate philanthropy in Hampton Roads in November. I look forward to sharing more information with you on both of these events as the details are finalized.

Thank you for your continued support of our AFP Chapter!

Keep up the good work,

Kenda G. Council
2020 President, AFP-HR

Monthly Virtual Meeting- June 23, 2020

 K Curtis
 W McGrady
Topic: Giving USA Report: 2019
Speakers: Keith Curtis and Wendy McGrady, The Curtis Group

Date: Tuesday, June 23, 2020
Time: 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Place: Zoom Meeting

The Curtis Group is proud to present the results of Giving USA 2020. Giving USA is the longest-running, most comprehensive study on philanthropy and is published in partnership with the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Keith Curtis, president of The Curtis Group and past chair of the Giving USA Foundation, and Wendy McGrady, executive vice president of The Curtis Group and co-chair of the Giving USA Editorial Review Board, will provide their own analysis of the numbers and give recommendations on how the data can be strategically applied to your fundraising strategy.

In light of current challenges for fundraisers, the session will engage participants in a conversation on recent changes in giving as well as last year’s trends. This session will provide professionals and board members with data to inform their fundraising strategies and practical guidance to advance the execution of those strategies.

Enhanced Charitable Giving Incentives

The CARES Act offers enhanced charitable giving incentives which may be of interest to your donors. Please find the below highlights from a recent AFP post:
• Temporary Universal Charitable Deduction—Taxpayers who do not itemize their deductions can take a one-time deduction of up to $300 for gifts made to charitable organizations, or $600 for those married, filing jointly.
• 60% AGI limitation suspended for individuals’ charitable contributions for the year 2020 - Typically, individuals can only take a charitable deduction of up to 60% of their AGI, no matter how much they give. For 2020, there is no limit, making cash contributions fully deductible.
• Cap increased on how much corporations may deduct for charitable gifts from 10% of taxable income to 25% - In addition, the limitation on deductions for food donations by corporations increases from 15% to 25% in 2020.
• Required minimum distributions (RMDs) for 2020 waived from retirement plans - Any minimum distributions from retirements plans that would have been required in 2020 can be delayed until 2021. This change reduces the incentive for donors to make gifts from their individual.
