Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education
Green Schools Newsletter

The Maryland Green School Program has had another great year!  In this edition of the MAEOE Green Schools Newsletter, we celebrate our 2017 New and Recertifying Maryland (MD) Green Schools.  We have now passed the 25% marker of our 100% MD Green Schools Goal! 585 or 26% of all public and independent schools in the state participate in the program. On Earth Day MAEOE announced the 2017 Maryland (MD) Green School Awardees; 60 new MD Green Schools joined the program, 65 schools recertified their MD Green School status including eight schools that have achieved Sustainable Green School Status! Congratulations to all of the schools awarded this year!

It was a pleasure reading through your applications. Our Maryland Green Schools are doing some amazing things in their school buildings and on the school grounds. Take a look at schools listed below and see if any schools are located near you so that you can congratulate them too! . Most of these schools were supported by our network of 45 Green Centers and 100+ Green Leaders.

This summer, we encourage you to take the opportunity to attend one of the many professional development workshops mentioned in this newsletter and posted on our MAEOE PD calendar on the website. Your participation in any of these professional development sessions will count towards your 1.2.1, 10% of school teachers have EE PD.

We also want to let you know that the 2018 MAEOE Conference call for proposals has opened. Consider presenting your green school projects at the conference! Proposals are due by August 1, more information and links are below.

Enjoy the last few days of school and have a nice summer break. Look for our Back to School newsletter in the fall!

Tip of the Month: Ways to Improve Indoor Air Quality

1. Keep your floors clean by daily mopping. You can skip the soaps and cleaners and just use plain water to capture any lingering dust or allergens.

2. Put a large floor mat at every door.People track in all sorts of chemicals via the dirt on their shoes.

3. You may associate that lemony or piney scent with a clean kitchen or clean clothes. But synthetic fragrances in laundry products and air fresheners emit dozens of different chemicals into the air.

4.Increasing the amount of fresh air brought indoors helps reduce pollutants inside. When weather permits, open windows and doors, or run an air conditioner with the vent control open.

Thanks to webmd.com and epa.gov for the tips!
