The Blue Campaign is
the unified voice for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS)
efforts to combat human trafficking. Working in collaboration with law
enforcement, government, non-governmental and private organizations, the
Blue Campaign strives to protect the basic right of freedom and to
bring those who exploit human lives to justice.
Myth: Human trafficking is only sex trafficking.
Fact: Sex
trafficking is not the only type of human trafficking. Forced labor is
another type of human trafficking; both involve exploitation of
people. Victims are found in legitimate and illegitimate labor
industries, including sweatshops, massage parlors, agriculture, restaurants, hotels, and domestic service.
Myth: Human trafficking victims will attempt to seek help when in public.
Fact: Human trafficking is often a hidden crime.
Victims may be afraid to come forward and get help; they may be forced
or coerced through threats or violence; they may fear retribution from
traffickers, including danger to their families; and they may not be in
possession of or have control of their identification documents.

Greetings!
We just wrapped up another informative lecture meeting February 8th, directed by Special Agent Andres Tapia, Program Manager of the EXODUS Command Center and the E2C2.
2017 promises to be an exciting
year for our members. Our March meeting will be an educational
opportunity as well, when members and guests gather to tour the ATF Law
Enforcement Memorial and Headquarters Museum at the ATF location in
Washington, DC. The tour will be guided by Chief Scott Bakka, CPP,
Security and Emergency Programs Division.
In April we will once again host
our ASIS NCC Scholarship Night, a time when we award scholarships to
students at the associate, baccalaureate and graduate levels. Each year
our chapter eagerly looks forward to meeting the winning students and investing in the security leaders of tomorrow.
None of our events would be
possible without the dedication and drive of our volunteer members who
serve on various committees and give of their time to make it happen.
There is only one missing component – YOU! There are still open
positions on chapter committees where you can make a difference.
Also, in a continuing effort to
engage all our members, don’t forget to fill out the Chapter Survey
email you receive after each monthly meeting. It only takes a few
moments to give your feedback which helps us get to know your needs
better. It is important we get a clear understanding of topics of
interest and speakers whom you would like to hear throughout the year.
Remember, this is your Chapter!
Best regards,
John E. Gallagher

February 2017 Meeting Recap: E2C2 Lecture and Luncheon
|
|
The National Capital Chapter of ASIS International welcomed 40 members and guests to the monthly Chapter meeting on February 8th, at the American Legion Post in Fairfax, Virginia.
After a time of networking and sitting down to lunch, NCC members were greeted by John Gallagher, Chair,
who introduced Special Agent Andres Tapia. Agent Tapia serves as
Program Manager assigned to the EXODUS Command Center and the Export
Enforcement Coordination Center (E2C2).
The Exodus Command
Center is the single point of contact for Homeland Security
Investigations (HIS) Special Agents and US Customs and Border Protection
(CBP) officers to obtain operational case support.
Agent Tapia has been
investigating persons who attempt to acquire and illegally export some
of the most critical military technology of the United States. Agent
Tapia monitors and coordinates investigative efforts of the field and
around the globe to prevent illicit procurement networks, terrorist
groups and hostile nations from illegally obtaining US military
products, sensitive dual-use technology, weapons of mass destruction, or
chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear materials.
A question and answer period followed the lecture presentation.
