OSHA and DHS Provide Guidance to Employers on Workplace Violence: OSHA is expanding its enforcement efforts under the general duties clause of the OSH Act to workplace violence investigations. A common link in the mass shootings and acts of terror we have seen recently is that they all take place in people’s workplaces, many times by current or former co-workers. In response to this, in December, 2015, OSHA launched a new webpage on violence prevention: https://www.osha.gov
/SLTC/workplaceviolence/
. The webpage offers guidance and information on workplace violence prevention. It also includes a link to OSHA’s updated and detailed Guidance for Preventing Workplace Violence for Healthcare and Social Service Workers. Many of the practices and programs promoted in the Guidance can be applied to non-healthcare settings to help reduce the risk of workplace violence. In addition, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has active shooter training guides and videos at: http://www.dhs.gov/active-shooter-preparedness. These include tips on: the Run, Hide, Fight Response Method; development of Emergency Action Plans; and training exercises and drills for employees.

Employers should spend time reviewing the DHS website, OSHA webpage and the Guidance. Then, assess the risks in your type of workplace and review policies on workplace violence. Would your employees know what to do if there was a shooter or other violent person in the workplace?

Legal Links is now a regular section providing useful links to employment law resources. This information is provided by MAHRA Members Andrea Chatfield, Esq. of Cook, Little, Rosenblatt & Manson and Jim Reidy, Esq. of Sheehan, Phinney, Bass, & Green.

Both of these positions are a perfect entry point to the board as they work side by side with the current Secretary and Treasurer.
