Here it is: The secret to daily flossing. Most everyone gets lazy on flossing, including me, where two members of my family are dentists. I read that the secret to establishing a daily flossing habit is to commit to flossing one tooth everyday. And that’s the key – commit to just one tooth. The reason is because the hardest part to all this is picking up that floss. But one tooth sounds like it’s hardly any work at all. So we trick ourselves into starting, and after that one tooth is flossed, we’d feel silly not to finish the entire job.
Sometimes the “start” is the hardest. So make that first step as easy as possible, so we don’t defeat ourselves before we start.
For example:
Instead of Thinking: "I have to make the best presentation possible."
How About: "I’m just going to make a crappy first slide."
Instead of Thinking: "I’m going to work out for an hour at the gym."
How About: "I’ll just get to the gym and see how I feel."
It’s just a way to get started and get your juices flowing. After all, you’re not going to stop at the first slide, and you certainly won’t get to the gym to just sit.
