A Note From Our Chapter President

Greetings WTS Community,

Happy Summer! I’d like to start this message with a big thank you to all who contributed to make this year’s scholarship fundraiser, Night at the Races, a big success. I am happy to announce that the event brought in over $18,500 that will be awarded in scholarships to young women pursuing careers in transportation.

Watch your inboxes for information about our many social events this summer. Our next big event is the Membership Mixer and DBE Expo on July 9th at Davio’s Restaurant. This event offers a great opportunity to come out and mingle with fellow WTS members and it is also a great way for members to introduce non-member friends within the industry to the Philadelphia Chapter of WTS. Primes will also have the chance to mingle with our DBE partners and talk about teaming opportunities. So grab a friend and join us there! Click on the link in the upcoming event section to the left to register.

Regards,
Syrnick_Megan

June Event Recap: Night at the Races Scholarship Fundraiser

PicMonkey Collage

WTS Philadelphia is... OFF TO THE RACES! Thanks to all who attended the WTS Philadelphia's Annual Scholarship Fundraiser on June 4, 2015. We hope you enjoyed the horse racing, hats, and of course the mint julips! See more photos from the event here!

Transportation YOU Update

06 Tr YOU Crop

On June 20th, Transportation You held our final event for the 2014-2015 program year. Our end of year celebration was a great event that celebrated all that the mentees had accomplished over this past year. From designing bridges and access routes, to touring local infrastructure, our girls found themselves viewing transportation from a different perspective. The event also featured a keynote speaker, Rochelle “Chellie” Cameron, who is the first female COO of the Philadelphia International Airport. Chellie gave words of encouragement and inspiration to the girls. She spoke of her experiences in the Air Force, discussed how to overcome obstacles, and challenged the girls to look beyond what we traditionally think of as transportation related careers. We are excited to celebrate the past year we had and are looking forward to putting together our 2015-2016 program year.

Professional Development Event Recap:
Financial Strategies 101

Written by: Karen Hulshizer, WTS Philadelphia Member and PD Committee Co-Chair

Over 30 members signed up to attend a presentation entitled “Financial Strategies 101,” held on June 25, 2015 at the Hampton Inn in Philadelphia. LaVon Chancy, JD, CPA, the Director of Tax & Business Advisory Services at Milligan & Company, LLC, and Ty McGilberry, a financial advisor from Wechsler Marsico Simpson, presented together on the financial and tax implications of monetary decisions made during various stages of life. Discussions revolved around funding college, retirement, and the importance of writing down SMART goals for a financial plan. They further emphasized the importance of keeping documents such as wills, powers of attorney, and health care directives up-to-date. During the presentation, LaVon and Ty also wove in stories from their work experiences to highlight the importance of planning, periodically revisiting financial goals, and involving a qualified attorney as appropriate.
