Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the Florida Dental Hygiene Association President this past year. I want to thank everyone who helped me throughout this year to make my term as President successful. I really do appreciate you all! Together we can accomplish much, not only for the advancement of our profession, but also by improving access to dental care and advocating for community water fluoridation. I’m so proud to be part of an association that continues to work toward a common goal of serving our community and advocating for the oral health of all the citizens of Florida.

The FDHA has had many successes this year. Our biggest success was helping to complete the first ever 3rd grade oral health screening surveillance for the State of Florida. The Florida Department of Health (FLDOH) contracted with FDHA to accomplish this momentous goal. The surveillance will help determine the oral health of our children in this state. FDHA will also participate in the Head Start Statewide Oral Health Screening this year and the Seniors Oral Health Screening the following year. FDHA hopes to continue its partnership with the FLDOH for many years to come. FDHA has also partnered with NOVA Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) and their Tobacco Cessation Initiative. NOVA AHEC will be providing funding to help train dental hygienists in Tobacco Cessation for their patients. They chose FDHA as a core partner with their initiative. They hope to have other organizations join the effort in the future. FDHA has also partnered with the DentaQuest Foundation to help move the Head Start Dental Home Initiative forward. DentaQuest has awarded FDHA funding to help children in Head Start receive preventive dental services and navigation into a dental home by a licensed dental hygienist. The hope is that the program, which started at a single center and is now county wide in Orange County, can be replicated throughout the state.

The FDHA has also decided to make community water fluoridation advocacy a part of a focus area. We have a representative for community water fluoridation on the Oral Health Florida Fluoridation Action Team. We want to continue our efforts to keep fluoride in community water systems, which will in turn improve the oral health of all of our citizens in Florida regardless of age, sex or social determinants.

I hope to see you all at the upcoming FDHA Annual Symposium starting September 18th through 21st. There will be many exciting continuing education courses offered as well as a special Key Note Speaker on Friday. There are many great things on the horizon for our profession. There has never been a more exciting time to be part of our professional association! Remember that we are always better together!

Warmest Regards,
Karen Hodge, RDH, MHsc
