Dear Colleagues
Thank you once again for your contributions to training and resource development. The scale of change we are witnessing is unprecedented, and creativity knows no bounds in the ways that colleagues are finding solutions to some rather wicked problems. Please keep the ideas flowing in. Support with the technology/pedagogy requirements of online delivery remains a key part of our suite of online workshops. In the weeks ahead, this support will focus on the development of assessments to best support learning within the online context.
An integrated approach to assessment is of paramount importance. We are asking all teams to consider the basics:
-
How do students know what good assessment is? Do we have a shared view of that within courses and programs? How are we working with students to enable them to understand assessment criteria and how to apply them?
-
How to provide focused feedback to support students in making progress by enabling them to understand what quality work is for themselves (what was good what let them down and how to improve)
-
How do we ensure authenticity in assessment? Viewing assessment in a streamlined way to consider what is the best way to assess whether a student has met the required learning outcomes, that is relevant to them now and in the future, is time and resource efficient for students and staff and fundamentally, promotes active student engagement with their learning.
-
How are we promoting student peer support both in the immediate and longer terms? In this endeavour, I would like to applaud the move to online for our PASS programs.
Crucially, in working remotely, we are asking how are we ensuring consistency and quality in our approaches to assessment at the course and program levels, and how are we building effective learning communities with our students that consider the whole experience of the student? We encourage you to send us a snippet (images/vlogs etc.) that captures the innovative ways you are engaging with your students.
We would also like to highlight the L&T Support Line, that will be available to all colleagues from Monday 6 April. Keep reading to find out more about this new initiative.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge and thank a number of colleagues. Learning Futures, Griffith Online, Digital Solutions and all teams working closely with us to support the development and sharing of resources. All LTCs who are working tirelessly to support work within the disciplines. All colleagues who are inviting peers into their workspaces to share approaches and to facilitate learning and development across teams. Our Exams and Timetabling team who are working tirelessly to support all the required changes that the move to online has necessitated.

In this week's video, hear how educators from the Griffith Business School are moving assessment and engagement online.
Watch the video
Dr Julienne Senyard (Senior Lecturer - Department of Business Strategy and Innovation) uses VoiceThread to create a video wall of team pitches, enabling students to contribute to other team’s pitches through feedback.

Dr Lili Mi (Associate Lecturer - Department of Business Strategy and Innovation) collaborated with her students to make the decision to Microsoft Teams for presentation assessment, finding that many of her students were keen to learn how to use the platform to acquire transferable skills that will be useful for their future work.
