Welcome to the first edition of Griffith Business School's Research Bulletin from the Office of the Dean (Research). This publication is intended to be your guide to all research activities in the School, including research impact success stories, major grant and commercial research wins, research appointments, and high-impact research and publishing awards.

RESEARCH IMPACT


ARC Excellence in Research for Australia – Business School Outcomes 2018

The 2018 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) national ranking exercise resulted in our Tourism, and Political Science Field of Research (FoR) codes being awarded the highest rating of 5 - "well above world standard" and our Marketing, and Policy and Administration FoR codes being rated 4 - “above world standard”. Applied Economics, Business and Management, and Commercial Services were rated 3 - "at world standard", along with the overall Commerce, Management, Tourism and Services Field of Research code. ARC Engagement and Impact Assessment

Further significant results were achieved in the inaugural nation‐wide Engagement and Impact (EI) assessment of University research and engagement (a companion to the 2018 Excellence in Research for Australia ranking exercise). The EI assessment provided ratings of High, Medium or Low to assess both engagement and impact for each two‐digit Field of Research code*. The research of our academic staff played a key role in achieving the following impressive results:

•14 (Economics): Medium for Engagement and High for Impact.
•15 (Commerce, Management, Tourism, and Services): Medium for Engagement and Medium for Impact.
•16 (Studies in Human Society): High for Engagement and Medium for Impact
•18 (Law and Legal Studies): High for Engagement and High for Impact.

Whistleblowing: New Rules, New Policies, New Vision

A major milestone was accomplished in December 2018 with the passing of new laws for whistleblower protections (part 9.4 AAA) in the Australian Corporations Act, overhauling the rules for big corporations including banks, that was influenced by Griffith research and Professor AJ Brown, from the School of Government and International Relations. His Whistling While They Work 2 research informed the Australian Government’s Joint Parliamentary Committee on the ‘State of the Nation’ for whistleblowing when staff speak up in organisations. It was cited during the deliberation phase before the legislation was passed, and it confirmed the need for this legislative action. Read more...

SMARTminds Employee Assessment Tool 2.0: Predicting Health and Safety Behaviour and Attitudes

Safe workplaces with reduced levels of health and safety incidents are becoming possible thanks to the SMARTminds 2.0 employee assessment tool developed by Associate Professor Rebecca Loudoun and colleagues, for Programmed, Australia’s largest staffing and maintenance services company with over 20,000 employees. “The SMARTminds assessment tool helps to overcome the safety reduction risk and provides a level of assurance to Programmed. MAJOR RESEARCH WINS


Congratulations to our researchers awarded major grants and commercial research.

Strengthening Australia’s national integrity system

Professor AJ Brown from the School of Government and International Relations and Centre for Governance and Public Policy was awarded an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant of $303,000 (including partner funding) for the project “Strengthening Australia’s national integrity system”. Professor Brown’s research informed the Australian Government’s Senate Select Committee on a National Integrity Commission in 2017, which recommended the final report be used to help guide ultimate reform. In September 2018, the project options paper was tabled in Federal parliament in a Matter of Public Importance debate on the creation of a federal anti-corruption body. Read more...

Mainstreaming climate change adaptation into the tourism sector in Thailand

Professor Susanne Becken from the Department of Tourism Sport and Hotel Management and Griffith Institute for Tourism was awarded $131,435 by the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) for the project “Mainstreaming climate change adaptation into the tourism sector in Thailand”. ARC College of Experts Appointment

Professor Fabrizio Carmignani, Dean (Academic) has been appointed a member of the 2019 ARC College of Experts. Professor Carmignani's expert duties can involve identifying research excellence, moderating external assessments and recommending fundable proposals. Read more...

Professor Yi-chong Xu from the Centre for Governance and Public Policy and School of Government and International Relations has been appointed a Fellow with the Academy of the Social Sciences. Fellows are elected for significantly advancing research knowledge. Read more...

Congratulations to our researchers awarded grants and commercial research.

Associate Professor Mohan Thite and Dr Sangita De from the Department of Employment Relations and Human Resources were awarded $348,206 by Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for an Australia Awards Short Course, titled “Evaluating workforce learning and development initiatives (Bhutan)”.

Associate Professor Andreas Chai, Dr Parvinder Kler, and Dr Athula Naranpanawa from the Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics, and Mr Tom Verhelst from Regional Innovation Data Lab were awarded $200,943 by the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy for the project “An empirical assessment of the QLD fuel price reporting scheme”.

Congratulations to our affiliates awarded grants and commercial research.

Dr Johanna Nalau from Griffith Institute for Tourism was awarded an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) of $352,000 for the project “Re-evaluating climate adaptation principles for a more resilient Australia”.

Mr Samuel Mackay Program Manager from Griffith Climate Change Response Program, Associate Professor Kerrie Foxwell-Norton, and Adjunct Industry Fellow Lex Drennan were awarded $135,770 by a Victorian Government Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning grant for the project “Development of policy guidance briefs on barriers to climate change adaptation”. This incorporates Policy Innovation Hub researchers.

Professor Andrew O'Neil, Dean (Research) is chief investigator on an interdisciplinary team awarded an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant of $227,033 for the project “Expectations and commitments in the Australia-USA alliance” with Professor Peter Dean from The University of Western Australia and Associate Professor Stephan Fruhling from The Australian National University. Emeritus Professor Kristine Toohey from the Department of Tourism, Sport and Hotel Management is chief investigator on a team awarded an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant of $267,000 for the project “Reconfiguring women’s professional sport on and off the pitch” with Professor Tracy Taylor from the University of Technology Sydney and Professor Clare Hanlon from Victoria University.

Congratulations to our staff on their achievements.

Dr Sarah Gardiner from the Department of Tourism, Sport and Hotel Management was awarded the Fellows Award for Excellence in Research by Australasian Universities Tourism and Hospitality Education (CAUTHE), at the conference in February.

Professor Adrian Wilkinson Director of the Centre for Work, Organisation and Wellbeing was short listed in HR Magazine for the award of "HR’s Most Influential International Thinker".

Dr Catheryn Khoo-Lattimore from the Department of Tourism, Sport and Hotel Management was awarded the Remarkable Minutes competition co-winner for “Women in tourism and gender equality” in 2018. She is completing a global report on "Women in tourism" for the United Nations World Tourism Organisation.Read more...
