Diann Dunn never imagined her daughter, Erin, would spend time in Cook Children's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), let alone Olivia, her granddaughter, as well. But, that's exactly what happened. From her daughter's stay in 1984 to her granddaughter's in 2018, Cook Children’s NICU has changed significantly, yet their compassion and dedication to providing the best care for patient families still remains.

Over the last 100 years, Cook Children’s has grown from a one-room hospital for babies to one of the largest pediatric health care systems in the nation. This is evident in their NICU's drastic improvements from just one generation to the next. Cook Children’s is proud to offer all-single rooms to families going through difficult times. It allows the families the time they so crucially need with their newborn babies.

Click here to read the full story about how Diann, Erin, and Olivia’s lives were forever transformed due to the constant care at Cook Children’s NICU.

Cathy Easter, President and Chief Executive Officer of Houston Methodist Global Health Care Services and Bilateral Chamber Advisory Board Member, commented on the new developments: “We are committed to improving the health of the global community, with an obvious focus on the Middle East, both from a patient care perspective, as well as more broadly from an institutional development perspective. I am passionate about the delivery of care, and excited to see Houston Methodist leveraging technology to develop offerings that improve so directly on that delivery. Health care is a complicated offering, and I am proud to be a part of real solutions that simplify our industry.”

Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center (Baylor St. Luke’s) is the first hospital in Texas to perform a breathing lung transplant using the Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion (EVLP) procedure with Organ Care System Lung (OCS Lung) technology. This technology is designed to keep donor lungs functioning and "breathing" in human-like conditions from the time of the donor procedure all the way to the transplant surgery.

Led by Dr. Gabriel Loor, the transplant was performed using the newest generation of EVLP platforms, Transmedics Organ Care System (OCS), a portable device that maintains the organ in its own physiologic state with warm blood perfusion, ventilation and a sophisticated monitoring system to continually assess the organ in flight. In this case, the donated lungs were flown in to Houston from the Midwest.

The device is the only portable EVLP system in the world and the only one that has undergone a positive FDA panel review in the U.S. as well as two rigorous international clinical trials. The OCS Lung System was officially approved by the FDA on March 23.
