AdvancED Accreditation Model Recognized

AdvancED School System Accreditation Protocol has been approved by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) as a continuous improvement model for Illinois’ public schools and school systems. AdvancED’s research-based Standards and indicators align with the existing state-approved structural system for effective practice to promote student growth and achievement.

ISBE strives to support all schools and school systems as each develops a comprehensive continuous improvement plan, while offering flexibility in their planning approaches. As a result, those systems that currently use Rising Star as its improvement model may opt to use the AdvancED School System Accreditation Protocol. The performance based protocol facilitates planning to assure optimal learning conditions are in place throughout the system.

System accreditation recognizes that increasing student achievement involves more than improving instruction. It is a result of how well all the parts of the education system – the school system, school and classroom – work together to meet the needs of students.

For more information about AdvancED School System Accreditation and how you can use this continuous improvement model for the benefit of the schools and students you serve, contact Becky Densmore at bdensmore@advanc-ed.org.

Performance Based Protocol Successfully Launched

AdvancED is pleased to announce feedback and field reviews of the performance-based protocol have been overwhelmingly positive. Launched this past fall, the new AdvancED Accreditation Protocol and newly added components of the AdvancED Adaptive System of School Improvement Support Tools (ASSIST™) are helping to provide focused efforts on improvement initiatives.

AdvancED Accreditation is rooted in a commitment to continuous improvement.  This visionary new accreditation protocol creates a stronger alignment between internal and external diagnostic review, stakeholder feedback and student performance results. The result is a performance-based accreditation process that provides each institution with a comprehensive analysis to drive continuous improvement. New Catholic Identity Criteria Available

With the release of the new Standards and Accreditation Protocol, updates to the original Catholic Identity tools and resources became a priority for AdvancED. At the beginning of the update process, AdvancED became aware of a national initiative led by Dr. Lorraine Ozar, Executive Director for the Center for Catholic School Effectiveness, School of Education, Loyola University Chicago, and Dr. Patty Weitzel–O’Neil, Executive Director of the Roche Center for Catholic Education, Lynch School of Education, Boston College. A series of meetings resulted in a collaborative agreement between Dr. Ozar, Dr. Weitzel–O’Neil, and AdvancED to provide project support for the integration of the new National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Schools into the AdvancED Accreditation Protocol.

Catholic Dioceses’ schools can apply the newly developed Catholic Criteria, as well as access a suite of diagnostic Catholic Identity surveys, in ASSIST. Catholic Dioceses also have access to System-level Catholic Identity criteria that is aligned with the school content in the same way that the AdvancED Standards for Quality School Systems align with the AdvancED Standards for Quality Schools. As an additional diagnostic tool in ASSIST, Catholic schools and school systems will be able to incorporate these newly developed criteria into their internal review process. Training has been scheduled in Oak Brook on March 15 to provide guidance on the integration with the Accreditation Protocol. For more information, contact the AdvancED Illinois Office.

Why is the Accreditation Progress Report so Important?

The Accreditation Progress Report (APR) engages schools and districts in focused internal analysis of its actions and progress since their External Review (formerly known as Quality Assurance Review). In completing the report, the school/district reviews each required action, summarizes actions taken, describes how the actions and results were evaluated to determine success, and references the evidence that the school/district has gathered to support its fulfillment of the required action. The APR is a required component of the accreditation process and is submitted one or two years following the External Review. The APR is a great tool for schools and districts to stay focused on their quest for continuous improvement.
