A Message from the Chapter President, Wendy Glick

IMG_1248 - WG 2 For me it all started at MAC. What’s MAC you ask? It stands for the Mid-America Conference on Fundraising and is the longest running regional fundraising conference in the United States. Our AFP chapter last hosted it in 2013 and my organization couldn’t afford the registration fee so I applied for a scholarship. I was one of several new members to AFP from our local chapter who received a scholarship and in exchange for waiving the registration fee to attend I was asked to serve on our chapter AFP board for one year. Here I am six years later serving as your chair and
what a joy it has been! Through AFP, I have attended countless professional development sessions- that have made me a better fundraiser- AND made so many wonderful friendships with fellow fundraisers.

SO . . . I encourage you to submit a scholarship application to attend MAC 2019. It will be held HERE in Wichita at the Hyatt Regency, May 5-7, 2019. Information about submitting a scholarship request can be found in this newsletter or on our website. You can find out details about the keynote speakers, the many breakout sessions and the fun social events taking place by visiting the MAC 2019 website at AFPMIDAMERICA.ORG. You can register to attend there too! Who knows what adventure attending MAC 2019 might begin for you!

Share a funny story or situation you have experienced in your profession: Very early in my career, my family and I were new to Wichita and new to sports. I worked for Bob Hanson at the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission. While serving in that organization, there might have been a time that I met Bill Self, a featured speaker at the Annual Johnny Bench Award. When Bill arrived at the silent auction for instruction, I had no clue that he was the coach at KU. I proceeded to give him the run-down of the
evening’s events. After the silent auction, as the three of us are walking to the Grand Eagle Ballroom, Bob asked if Bill and I have met. Bill smiled and said yes, we’ve met. At which point Bob said, “She didn’t even know who you were, did she?” In hind sight this is comical, (who doesn’t know Bill Self – in KANSAS??) I have learned a valuable lesson about knowing your featured guest.
