2014 ACHE Breakfast (November 6, 2014)

On Thursday morning November 6, the annual ACHE breakfast was held in conjunction with the Missouri Hospital Association (MHA) Annual Convention and Trade Show at the Tan-Tar-A Resort. This breakfast is the Missouri version of the national ACHE breakfast that is held during the annual meeting of the American Hospital Association in Washington, D.C. each spring. We are grateful to Herb Kuhn, MHA President, for his presence at this breakfast and support of MOHEG.
The guest speaker was Ms. Kimberly Mosely, CAE, ACHE’s VP for Management Information Systems & CIO. Kim gave an excellent overview of national ACHE initiatives, including the fact that there are now more than 45,000 affiliates of the ACHE and that ACHE is undergoing a conversion to a new Association Management System which will continue to enhance communications with the field.

David Baltzer, RN, LFACHE presented an update from the MOHEG Communications Committee regarding member survey results that will be published in MOHEG Chapter News. 2014 is the first year for MOHEG’s Student Essay Award (M-SEA). This award was conceived during MOHEG’s strategic planning retreat in 2013 and was approved by the MOHEG board. The purposes of M-SEA are to inspire professionalism among evolving health care leaders enrolled in one of Missouri’s six Higher Education Network (HEN) programs affiliated with ACHE and to generate original articles for MOHEG Chapter News. A 100 point scoring rubric was developed by St. Louis University with emphasis on well-supported original thinking presented with good use of the English language. Each HEN program was invited to submit one essay for final review by a panel of distinguished judges.
The 2014 recipient of M-SEA is Ms. Lindsey M. Lehman for her essay, “The Importance of Health Insurance Literacy.” Lindsey is a native of Bolivar, MO who is expected to graduate with a Master of Health Administration degree from the University of Missouri in May 2015. In July 2015 Lindsey will begin a 2-year post-graduate fellowship with the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. The award is a $1,000 gift, lodging & registration for the ACHE breakfast, commemorative plaques for Lindsey & Mizzou, and publication of the winning essay in MOHEG Chapter News. Regent Weckenborg presented the Regent’s Awards. Each year the Regent has the opportunity to recognized individuals who have arisen as leaders within the industry and profile the values and qualities of ACHE healthcare leadership. Working with members of the Regent’s Advisory Committee on nominations and references, two members were selected for the Early Career ACHE Leadership Award:

The breakfast meeting adjourned in time for attendees to continue participating in the MHA activities of the Convention. MHA staff delivers one of the best state hospital association annual programs in the United States. We Missourians can be proud of MHA leadership advocacy for health care. A Template for Leaders

On mid-June 2014, I received a call from Terra Levin, Regional Director for ACHE, asking me if I would be interested in presenting at the annual ACHE Leaders Conference in September. The topic she asked me to present was on Diversity and Inclusion in Health Care and the invitation arose from the fact that the KAHCE Chapter had recently submitted a program application for a July program on this topic. This was an honor but would involve thoughtful preparation and engagement of the entire board of KAHCE. Instead of simply planning for an educational program, we embarked on having discussions at the board level each month on this topic. This coincided with the call to action from ACHE for each chapter to submit a “Statement on Diversity” in alignment with our national organization’s position on the right of all people to have fair and equitable care and treatment regardless of race, age, culture, sexual orientation or gender. Through thoughtful dialogue and email communications with my fellow board colleagues, KAHCE adopted a statement and also a more open communication approach regarding this topic. This all began back in December 2013 at the annual KAHCE Board retreat when we began discussing the need to step forward as a professional organization to address this issue as a social and community health need and not as a partisan political agenda. We agreed long before we heard from ACHE about the Statement on Diversity that this aligned with being effective and responsible leaders in health care.[READ MORE...]
