National Housing Conference 2013 e-update

20 August 2013

With less than three months until we gather in Adelaide for the National Housing Conference 2013 – a new way home, we’re excited by the positive response from the sector about this year’s conference program. In this edition of the conference e-update we announce some great new speakers and introduce a number of special events on offer to delegates in Adelaide.

New speakers announced

Ms Fran Kelly, respected radio presenter, current affairs journalist and political correspondent, has been a feature of the ABC's coverage of local and world affairs on both radio and television and is currently host of ABC Radio National's agenda-setting Breakfast program. Fran will facilitate the opening plenary session on Wed 30 Oct which will feature a panel of leading speakers examining the major conference themes. Given her long and varied career across media, Fran is perfectly placed to open up the conversation around the conference theme — a new way home.

Mr Warren Mundine is a well respected Indigenous leader whose life and career have been shaped by a deep-seated personal commitment to community, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, and he has more than 26 years experience working in the public, private and community sectors.  Warren will be our lead speaker in our major concurrent session examining economic development and indigenous communities on Thu 31 Oct.

Ms Amanda Blair brings almost 20 years of experience as a broadcaster, a columnist with the Sunday Mail and a member of the Social Inclusion Board to her role of facilitator of the closing plenary on Fri 1 Nov. Amanda has a keen interest in social justice – she produced Comedy for a Cause as part of the Adelaide Fringe Festival in 2004, 2006 and 2008, which raised funds for the homeless of Adelaide. She will facilitate the closing session of the conference, which will feature a panel of current and former political leaders.

Visit the speakers page of the conference website for a full list of confirmed speakers.

Satellite events

Have you seen the range of satellite events being held on Tue 29 and Wed 30 Oct at the Adelaide Convention Centre? There are a number of interesting events that you may wish to consider attending for in depth analysis of key housing issues. Current events include:

Workshop - Improving 21st century housing outcomes for older people: maximising choice and preventing housing discrimination
This one-day workshop is aimed at all those concerned with better housing outcomes for older people. The workshop will assist those involved with the planning, design and construction of older persons housing to better describe how housing can best meet their needs.

AURIN workshop
Participants in this workshop will explore AURIN's extensive data repositories and learn how to extract information about Australian cities. Knowledge of these issues is essential to understanding patterns of urban development, to form and model urban growth for a sustainable future.

Australasian Housing Institute Awards
The AHI will present their 2013 awards at the conference on the evening of Wed 30 Oct. The awards provide an opportunity to showcase social housing success stories and formally recognise and reward excellence in professional practice, from the grass roots to the most senior levels.

To find out how to register for these special events visit the satellite events page of the conference website.

With a rich program continuing to develop and some wonderful opportunities for networking and socialising, we look forward to you joining us in Adelaide for our biennial gathering of the housing clans.
