MOHEG Announces
The Student Essay Award (M-SEA)

The Missouri Health Executives Group (MOHEG) Board of Directors is inviting future healthcare leaders to contribute to the literature of the field of healthcare management through its MOHEG Student Essay Award (M-SEA) competition.  MOHEG is the independently incorporated 501(c)3 Missouri chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).  Any student currently enrolled in one of Missouri’s 6 ACHE Higher Education Network (HEN) programs is eligible to compete for this award.

The M-SEA reflects the mutual goals of the ACHE and MOHEG by inspiring professionalism at an early career stage.  The main purpose of the M-SEA is to challenge students to develop thoughts about the system of health care delivery in the United States and stimulate the field through publication of essays in MOHEG’s Chapter News.  To encourage creativity, the M-SEA 2014 Guidelines specify that essay topics are to be chosen by the entrant.

The author of the chosen essay will receive $1,000.00 and be a guest of honor at the ACHE breakfast during the Missouri Hospital Association’s Annual Convention and Trade Show at Tan-Tar-A in the Lake of the Ozarks on Thursday November 6, 2014.  All published participants in M-SEA will earn 2 ACHE Recognition Program points and commendation from MOHEG.


Guidelines: 
The essay is to be an original composition on a topic to be chosen by the entrant.  The essay should be of length between 800-1,100 words in Microsoft Word using a Times New Roman 12 font and 1 inch borders.  Pages should be numbered.  Footnotes may be provided in an appendix.  Essays must be the work of one individual.  Upon examination, any essay containing plagiarized material will be disqualified.

The centered heading should give the following information:

  1. MOHEG Student Essay Award
  2. Title of the essay
  3. HEN Program in which student is enrolled and expected graduation date
  4. Student name including prefixes and suffixes
  5. Student contact information
  6. Date of the essay composition

Deadline is: September 12, 2014

Scoring: 
Final evaluation will be based on a preference for original thinking that is based on demonstrates an understanding of health care management that is presented with a high quality of writing in order to make a contribution to the field of health care management.

Rights: 
MOHEG reserves the right to use submitted essays in its newsletter Chapter News

Eligibility:
Participation in the M-SEA project is open to ACHE affiliate students enrolled in any Missouri ACHE HEN program.  Missouri residency is not a requirement.

Timetable:

  1. September 12, 2014; 11:59 PM…Deadline for submission of essays to MOHEG
  2. October 3, 2014…Deadline for each HEN school to pick one representative essay
  3. October 16, 2014…DJBaltzer M-SEA Review Committee blindly selects $1,000 M-SEA awardee and notifies awardee and HEN programs of final results
  4. November 6, 2014…Recognition of award recipient at the ACHE breakfast during Missouri Hospital Association (MHA) Annual Convention and Trade Show

Recognition:

  1. Financial award of $1,000.00 to one recipient
  2. Award recipient gets 1 night lodging 11/5/2014 and paid mileage to Tan-Tar-A
  3. Award recipient gets paid guest attendance at 11/5/2014 MHA evening social event
  4. Award recipient is guest of honor at ACHE breakfast on 11/5/2014
  5. Awarded essay receives highlighted publication in MOHEG Chapter News
  6. Award recipient is featured in press releases
  7. 2 ACHE Recognition Program Volunteer Service Award points are earned by all contributors of essays 800 words or more in length that are published in an ACHE Chapter newsletter
  8. All contributors of M-SEA essays will receive commendation from MOHEG.
