PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear GTC IFMA members,
I’m writing this President’s Letter as summer “officially” comes to an end and as many North Carolinians struggle with the after-effects of Hurricane Florence. Our membership has a stellar reputation for helping those who need help.  We had already planned an event, Yappy Hour/Bingo for Bones, to benefit the local SPCA. As you can imagine, they used the bulk of donated funds ($875!) for hurricane relief.  Please continue your support of our neighbors in need (both human and those with four paws).

Many members ask why GTC IFMA can’t make a direct contribution to local charities?  IFMA’s by-laws state that we are a non-profit organization and therefore cannot contribute money directly; however, thanks to our Community Outreach Committee, headed by Kellie Renzi and Ed Boyle, we have many opportunities throughout the year to support local organizations.   In November, they will be heading the GTC’s efforts to collect Toys for Tots.  March Madness allows us to funnel contributions to the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Triangle.  Not to be outdone, our Spring Golf Tournament Committee, under the tutelage of Todd Taintor and Buck Fisher, raises approximately $10,000 for IFMA-related scholarships.  And summer brings the annual Ronald McDonald House dinner preparation and service.  Please join us or suggest additional opportunities for service!

As you work on the Hurricane Florence-related repairs needed at your facilities, please remember to check our current sponsorship list for resources to help you.  It’s through their efforts that we’re able to host our events, luncheons, and tours…and they appreciate your business!

In closing, I’d like to remind all of you that World Workplace takes place this year in Charlotte, NC and begins on Wednesday, October 3.  So far, 70 of our members are registered to attend.  Our Professional Development Committee, chaired by Randal Goller, awarded four scholarships to this year’s event (see additional letter in this newsletter). Special thanks to Connie Drake for her assistance in planning the event in conjunction with the Charlotte chapter (actually, ALL the Carolinas chapters) and to Laura Shaw for her work on the IFMA Foundation Gala.

Have fun and stay safe!

Cris Karasek
President 2018-2019

OCTOBER MONTHLY MEETING

Join the Greater Triangle Chapter of IFMA on Wednesday, October 17th at 11:30AM for our next monthly meeting featuring Instructor Jon Strassner, Director with Workplace Strategies, on Sustainability.

INSTRUCTOR:   Jon Strassner About the Instructor

COURSE TITLE:  BEYOND SUSTAINABILITY | What if manufacturing made the world a better place?

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  It’s time to think beyond sustainability. With damaged ecosystems and habitats that are in desperate need of restoration, sustaining what we have is no longer good enough. Now is the time for designers and manufacturers to work toward creating a Net Positive Impact – meaning not only doing less harm but giving more back to our environment. Companies driving the conversation are now tracking their “handprint” through quantitative, metrics-based processes that measure their restorative impact on the environment. Everything we do has an impact on communities, habitats and ecosystems and manufacturers need to be held accountable. Ask yourself: are you removing toxic chemicals from your products? Are you investing in habitat preservation? Do you implement social equity programs within your organization? These are just some areas that manufacturing needs to consider. We have evolved from “sustainability” to “environmental responsibility” to finally, “social responsibility.” This is an amazing evolution of the conversation! Please join us for a compelling discussion about restorative operations, healthy material selection, habitat preservation and social equity as they relate to our commitment to having a Net Positive impact on our global community.

IFMA ADVOCACY DAY 2018

GTC of IFMA Chapter President, Cris Karasek, attended IFMA Advocacy Day 2018 on September 12th and 13th.  Sponsored by IFMA National’s Public Policy Committee, Advocacy Day is an annual event that allows IFMA members and chapter leaders to apply their FM expertise to the public policy process.

The tagline for this year’s “pitch” to our NC State Senators and Congressmen was Effective Facility Management: Reducing Waste, Increasing Productivity, and Protecting Asset Value.  For a complete list of Policy Requests, please click here.

Each chapter representative was given a list of current policy issues and a schedule of appointments to meet with their respective Senate and House Representatives.  As a prelude to the meetings, the group heard presentations from several State Representatives including Dr. Virginia Fox (R-NC) Chair, House Education and Workforce Committee.  Dr. Fox is a native North Carolinian and advocates workforce development through internships, apprenticeships, and workplace education.

The trip also included a behind-the-scenes tour of the Supreme Court Building hosted by Facility Manager Joseph A. Campbell.  Mr. Campbell is employed by the Architect of the Capitol Office.

Want to get involved?  No experience is needed for this event, just a desire to help advance the FM profession. Once you experience this tremendous benefit of IFMA Advocacy Day participation, you’ll see why so many attendees keep coming back each year. Please contact Cris Karasek for more information!
