Welcome to Boulder Valley Gifted and Talented!

Last month’s opening Speaker Event drew parents from near and far, educators seeking understanding and professional expertise, and even some students who gained insight into themselves. Dr. Webb spoke on key issues of giftedness at home and in the classroom and has graciously allowed us to post his slides on the BVGT website. Please honor his work by reflecting and sharing with others, giving him credit when you distribute his efforts and insights.

In October, we welcome Dr. Brian Housand on technology, highlighting areas of both concern and excitement. Please note we have limited seating and will work to videotape this talk, especially to allow those who can’t attend on Yom Kippur to access the Speaker Event afterwards.

As always, we look forward to seeing you.

BVGT 2016-17 October Speaker Event:

Today’s Technology and Gifted Students: What Parents Need to Know by Brian Housand

If growing up in a digital age is challenging, parenting in one is even more difficult. With unprecedented access to technology that changes daily, children are being asked to grow up in a world where the digital footprint that they create today has the potential to follow them forever. Does limiting their access to technology protect them or unwittingly place them at a deficit? This session will equip parents with tools and strategies to empower and engage gifted kids, tweens, and teens in the global digital world.

 Wednesday, October 12th

CAGT Conference (Oct. 10-11) and Parent Institute (Oct. 10)—Still time to register!

BVGT is a local affiliate of the Colorado Association of Gifted and Talented (CAGT). The annual CAGT conference offers a wealth of information for both educators and parents. Given our proximity to Loveland and the convenient one-day, two-day, or one-evening Parent Institute options, the CAGT conference offers a great opportunity to extend knowledge and commune with like-minded others.

Parent Institute Scholarships Available for BVGT Members

BVGT still has scholarships for members to attend the Parent Institute which is held October 10th as part of the annual CAGT conference. If you are a member, and interested in attending, please email Membership@BVGT.org by October 6th. Tickets will be issued on a first come, first served basis, so join/renew now!  For more information on membership, visit our website.  You will not want to miss this!
Parent Liaison Network

BVGT’s Parent Liaison Network builds bridges and community. At September’s meeting, we gathered some of our 2016-17 liaisons and learned more about the Boulder Valley School District’s TAG services, staff, and programming options.

If you want to help inform your own school, share ideas and problem solving with other parents, and learn about the landscape in local education—and beyond—please consider being a parent liaison. For more information, contact Kristin Kusmierek at parents@bvgt.org, or visit the Parent Liaison page on our website.

Next meeting:

Thurs., Oct. 27, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., Louisville Public Library, 951 Spruce St., Louisville

Around Town and Beyond

Of course, BVGT is not the only resource relevant to educators and families of high potential youth—nor should it be! Most of our members are interested in building a wide network of resources and of like-minded others. We try to help by posting events and enrichment opportunities as we are able, and we assume that the adults in children’s lives will determine whether these activities are interesting and appropriate for them.

Please follow us on the BVGT Facebook page and visit the “Around Town” section of the BVGT website to find upcoming events from an array of organizations involved in serving the gifted community. We’ll provide the link at the bottom of this newsletter each issue.

Notable upcoming events around town include:

Mackintosh Academy Parent Education Series

October 20 – Creating Innovators
November 6 – I am a Scientist
