Depicting Veteran Concerns
EIC Supports Got Your 6
A Spotlight Message from
EIC's President and CEO, Brian Dyak

You may have heard the expression, “Got Your 6.” In the military, this means, “I’ve got your back.” Starting today, “Got Your 6” will come to represent a powerful show of respect and understanding for our veterans and military families.

EIC is pleased to sit on the Steering Committee as a catalyst within the entertainment industry for the "Got Your 6" campaign, officially launching today. Nearly every major Hollywood entertainment studio, broadcast and cable network, talent agency, and guilds are uniting to launch this unprecedented awareness campaign to create a new conversation in our country about veterans and military families. The awareness phase of the campaign will bring to bear the tremendous assets of our partners in the entertainment industry—crossing television, print, radio, outdoor and social media platforms.

EIC has been heavily involved in a strategic plan to bring greater attention to our growing Veteran population. Earlier this year, we held a briefing in collaboration with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at the Writer's Guild addressing Veteran's Mental Health concerns. Most recently, a special tribute to our nation's service members occurred at the 16th Annual PRISM Awards ceremony. In the months ahead,  an entire segment of this years nationally televised PRISM Awards Showcase will be devoted to Veteran's needs. EIC is working closely and diligently with the creative community relative to accurate depictions and storytelling. Please take a moment to watch the launch PSA and a moment more to remember our fallen heroes and Veterans who have devoted their skills and talents to protecting our freedoms.

Depiction Suggestion

Show the consequences of unaddressed mental health concerns on the Veteran who lives with it, as well as his or her family and community.

  • Until they are diagnosed and begin to understand the source of the disruption in their lives, individuals who live with a mental health concern often are blamed by others and blame themselves for their sometimes irrational or unexplainable behavior. Think about ways to show how a character who seems to exhibit behavior that is outside the norm as living with a condition that is not only diagnosable but also treatable.
  • Although the anxiety and panic sometimes caused by mental illnesses are only experienced physically by those diagnosed, the way that it affects them personally affects everyone around them, oftentimes leading to feelings of isolation. When depicting these issues consider showcasing the impact that family and community acceptance and support can have in leading an individual to seek the help that they may need.
