President's Message
As October turns to November, the Chapter continues to move forward on several exciting fronts! For those who missed our first ever Professional Members Only- Speaker Series event held in early October, we had a strong program by Joseph Buri, Director of Facility Services for Southeastern Health, a great lunch and a fun opportunity to network. Read more about his presentation below. Our next event in this series is scheduled for April 2018 with additional details to follow.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at our Annual Chapter Appreciation Event this month. Please remember to bring your Toys for Tots donation and add some joy to this holiday season. For additional information on how to donate to this cause, see the article below.
Wishing our members and your families a wonderful Thanksgiving! The holiday comes with its share of stresses, whether shouldering responsibility for the day or traveling to see loved ones, so try to carve out some time for yourself to recharge. Adding some fun on the calendar makes all the difference!
Once again, a warm thank you to all our volunteers and sponsors that donate their precious resources to add a little fun to our Chapter. Join us!

October Professional Only- Speaker Series 2017
By Susannah Barringer, LEED AP BD+C
On Wednesday, October 4th, 2017, the professional members of GTC of IFMA gathered at Terracon’s Raleigh office for our first Professional Only-Speaker Series to hear Joseph Buri Jr., Director of Facility Services at Southeastern Health, discuss the impact of Hurricane Matthew and the strategies he and his team at Southeastern Health in Lumberton, NC implemented to respond to the needs of the community.
On Saturday, October 8th, 2016, Hurricane Matthew hit North Carolina with a record rainfall of up to 18 inches in some areas, which was 10 inches more than what was predicted. In only the first few hours of the hurricane at Southeastern Health Hospital in Lumberton, NC, water had begun leaking into the mid-century building through its windows and walls. Power and internet was lost, the main entrance had completely flooded and, most consequently, municipal water service was a loss. Luckily, Mr. Buri and his team already had a plan. They made sure they were equipped with basic supplies through Thursday, and the emergency plan was updated and communicated to staff. Unfortunately, nothing could have prepared them for the unprecedented conditions they were about to face.
Day One
· Main roads and the airport are completely flooded and impassable
· Throughout the day, flood waters begin shifting, causing new road closures
· Visitors to the hospital are restricted due to overcrowding and limited resources
· A hospital representative is placed at the Robeson County Operations Center
· Southeastern Health begins operating on backup generators

December 2017 Monthly Meeting
The Greater Triangle Chapter of IFMA is pleased to present a workshop on generational differences for our December 13th luncheon at 11:30AM at Embassy Suites, 201 Harrison Oaks Boulevard, Cary, NC 27513.
Speaker: Dr. Jolene Erlacher BIO
Title: Understanding and Maximizing Generational Differences and Strengths
Description: An essential workshop that provides an overview of the core characteristics, values and needs of the different generations represented in our society today. Millennials (ages 22-36) have now surpassed Baby Boomers as the majority of the workforce in America. They bring with them unique expectations, perspectives and needs. Often differences in work ethic, communication styles, and measurements of success result in frustration and misunderstanding. This workshop provides valuable insights into generational strengths and differences, and insights into navigating them effectively!
When: Wednesday, December 13, 2017 from 11:30AM - 1:30PM
