PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The page has turned on 2021, and everyone is eagerly greeting 2022.  With a fresh start, you might have new goals you want to achieve. Below are a few examples of how the chapter can help you achieve what may be on your list of New Year’s Resolutions.

Resolution #1 – I will be more involved with the chapter.

How the chapter can help you:  We have seven committees. The work of each committee is vital to meeting the mission of the Greater Triangle Chapter of IFMA. We have a committee that will allow you to become more involved with chapter operations no matter your interests. Look at the committees as an opportunity to hone your existing skills. Better yet, if you have a skill that you want to improve, join a committee and take on a task/project that will let you work on that skill.

Resolution #2 – I will no longer be a mailbox member.

How the chapter can help you:  We have at least 13 events you can attend to learn about industry trends, network with peers, potential clients, and potential suppliers, and support the communities in which we work.  With events ranging from six monthly meetings, a handful of special events, and tours and socials peppered in, there’s something for everyone. One goal for this year was to increase engagement. We’ve shifted some meeting times to morning or afternoon to accommodate busy schedules and move events around the Triangle to encourage attendance. Couple this with the committee meetings, and there are over 20+ times you can engage with the chapter.

Resolution #3 – I will continue my educational pursuits related to Facilities Management.

How the chapter can help you:  This coming calendar year, we will be hosting a CFM prep course on May 2, 2022. The goal of the one-day intensive is to help you better understand the methodology of the exam. In addition to the CFM training, the chapter offers scholarships to attend conferences and help offset your FMP or SFP training costs.

I encourage you to look at what the chapter offers and commit to engaging with the chapter in the coming year.

GTC OF IFMA JANUARY MONTHLY MEETING

IFMA MM JAN 2021.1

Join us for a new way to think about mentorship with Doug Stewart.  There has never been a more challenging time to be in a mentor/mentee relationship. Especially if you have a traditional view of mentorship. It's a big idea, and most of the time, the expectations and intended outcomes differ between the teacher and the learner. In this session, Doug Stewart (TEDx Speaker and author of 5 1/2 MENTORS) will help us discover a new way to think about and interact with mentorship. You may be surprised just how far and how fast you can grow alongside your mentor or mentee. That is, of course, if you're willing to do the work.

Registration Will Close Friday, January 7th!

COMMUNITY OUTREACH TOYS FOR TOTS SHOPPING DAY

The GTC of IFMA Board and Community Outreach Committee had a fantastic time shopping with the Marines from the Toys for Tots Foundation. The Chapter raised over $1600 to purchase gifts for kids in our community. A special thank you to Roofwerks, Red Coats, Inc., and RestorePro Reconstruction for the assist on the overage (it's hard to stop buying presents for kids in need when you hit your budget limit). Because of you, we were able to go above and beyond what our Chapter raised. We bought over 330 items.

The Chapter would like to personally thank Bobby Grant, Cathy Boyd, Cory Barns, Dave Smith, David Sielaty, Ed Boyle, Holly Bowers, Lisa Davis, Lynne Beaman, Connie Drake, and Matt Gardner for all you do to help our chapter support our community. The work you do is truly inspiring and connects our chapter with the communities where we live and work.

A special thanks to Ed Boyle for starting the Toys for Tots program over a decade ago!

All toys were delivered on December 13th, and we collected 11 full boxes of toys and 5 bicycles along with multiple skateboards and scooters.

 DECEMBER TOUR AND SOCIAL RECAP

Our very Tim Carr, CFM opened the doors of the Southeast Raleigh YMCA and Elementary School to our membership.  This is a remarkable building combining the needs of the YMCA of the Triangle and Wake County Public System to meet the needs of the community while reducing the overall footprint by sharing centrally located common spaces. The campus is part of the Southeast Raleigh Promise (SERP) and was developed with the Purpose Built Communities model, which seeks to address systemic social and educational inequities.

The commitment to the community goes far beyond the building. Students of the elementary school are given the opportunity to take swim lessons. There is a green roof with educational garden plots and a teaching kitchen, and the site also has 120 affordable housing units with full access to the YMCA. The partnership will truly change the lives of the residents of SE Raleigh.

GTC OF IFMA CHAPTER MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

by Michael O'Brien, CFM

The Greater Triangle Chapter of IFMA has always focused on providing growth opportunities for its members.  Those opportunities are not limited to the learning found in the monthly meetings, building tours, professional member events, volunteer opportunities in the community or networking at social events.  For a number of years, our members networked among themselves and developed their own mentoring network.  In 2021, the Greater Triangle Chapter of IFMA established an ad-hoc mentorship program to test the viability of providing chapter members with an opportunity to mentor or be mentored.

We had two groups of mentors and mentees who established their mentorships and you’ll see some of their comments in this month’s newsletter.

As we enter 2022, you will hear more about the benefits of mentorship from our January member meeting to the new established Mentorship page under the Professional Development Committee!  The opportunity to participate in a Mentorship comes with the benefits of paying it forward, learning from someone else, and developing one’s leadership and listening skills, and being exposed to new and different perspectives. We’d love to expand the conversation to work and increase one’s performance, job satisfaction, self-confidence and self-awareness too and ultimately the chance for promotion.  IFMA accreditation provides many opportunities as well to growing one’s skill sets in these areas as well and can also be part of a mentorship focus.  The key is that the mentee and mentor get to develop the areas of focus and the path to growth.

Look for more information from the chapter in January and consider becoming a Mentor or Mentee.  Reach out to Mike O'Brien if you have any questions as well.
