Issue 261, 10 Sep 2019

Dear Members and Friends

In last week’s issue I talked about the beginnings of your Chamber and how it was founded to retain Singapore’s free port status. Free trade has been at the heart of Singapore’s economic development and it is just the same for all other countries.

Free trade’s detractors today around the world conveniently gloss over the fact that the problems of communities disadvantaged by globalization is not a failure of free trade but, rather, of domestic policy. It is always easier to blame someone or something rather than shoulder responsibility for one’s own omissions.

The escalating trade war between the US and China is but one facet of a geo-political relationship which is likely to be confrontational for decades. Rising China is like a continental plate pushing upwards against the US, the current superpower. The story of how Huawei is caught in the middle of this fractious relationship is an interesting one which is why we’ll be featuring it next week. It’ll be a learning event for us all.

Have a productive week ahead.

Yours faithfully
Victor Mills
Chief Executive
