The Future of Swiss Banking: Challenges and Opportunities
Strong financial centres, ever-increasing banking regulation, a complex relationship with the EU – the UK and Switzerland are facing similar challenges. The two countries, however, have chosen different ways of addressing them. Patrick Odier, Chairman of the Swiss Bankers Association, will speak about current banking issues, including client secrecy versus tax transparency, and protectionism versus EU market access. Will Swiss banking maintain its leading role in global wealth management? Or will other financial centres in the Far East overtake Zurich, Geneva and London altogether? Attend our Lunch with Patrick Odier on Thursday, 24th October in London and find out more about why the prospects for the future remain optimistic.

GO EAST YOUNG MAN!
Recently, our Geneva-based BSCC Councillor Nick Dryden, of Dryden Associates S.A., was a member of the official delegation which accompanied the President of the Geneva State Council, Mr Charles Beer, to China. The reason for the visit? The signing of a crucially important and strategic cooperation agreement between Geneva and Beijing. In order to simultaneously promote Geneva, the State Chancellery, together with the Department of Regional Affairs, Economy and Health (DARES), organized an exhibition entitled "Geneva Days", in the heart of Beijing, where Genevois from the worlds of finance, industry, education, tourism, luxury and health participated.
The Emerging Markets: Opportunity or Risk for Swiss business?
Many Swiss businesses are considering to establish a foothold in the emerging markets. Whilst impressive economic growth is a major pulling factor, that very same growth also means that Swiss companies need to be able to hold their own in what has become a highly competitive global business environment. Switzerland may continue to rank first in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index (GCI), but this does not make Swiss companies immune from the effects of inflation, volatile exchange rates and unanticipated risks. Our carefully selected panellists will engage in a lively discussion based around this topic on Wednesday, 6th November 2013 in Berne.

Lunch with Thomas Kern, CEO of Zurich Airport
The Zurich Chapter was delighted to welcome Thomas Kern, CEO of Zürich Airport, as a guest at the first lunch of the new season. With the help of a fascinating, multimedia presentation, he highlighted the challenges of appeasing different communities on aircraft noise with maintaining Zürich's status as a major international airport. He also gave some breathtaking insights into the expected growth in flight and passenger numbers in the coming decades. The "icing on the cake" was Mr Kern's generous invitation to personally host a "behind the scenes" tour of the airport next year which was very enthusiastically received.
