Coding a new generation of technologists!
 A Message from EIC's President, CEO & Co-Founder, Brian Dyak
We all remember the scene in The Social Network where young, hip computer science students were ‘dialed in,’ coding away, on the new website that would soon become “thefacebook.com,” not to be disturbed by the outside world. I don’t know about you, but that scene made this skill look less like a job or boring class assignment and more like a cool hobby -- a club only these students could engage in due to their unique skill set.
These coders were not only effective characters, but, more impressively, they are real people -- creative individuals working every day at companies like Facebook and many others. The surprising part is, there are not enough of them! Computer coding is like learning a new language, and when it comes to the entertainment industry it is a language that is becoming increasingly essential. As the creative palate for newer, bigger, and more epic scenes and locations continues to expand, the need for individuals that can create and code the new technology to create them is increased. And in order to meet this increasing demand the responsibility falls to all of us to encourage young people to get involved.
More students need to be taught computer coding to fill the number of jobs that are available now and the increased number that will become available in the near future. That is where you, the entertainment industry professional, come in. Your continued efforts to make science, engineering, and technology skills engaging by portraying exciting careers to young people will continue to help us answer the question: where will the next generation of science, engineering and technology professionals come from?
This month we are proud to shine the spotlight on an aligned organization working to promote coding education in public schools, Code.org!

Profile On: Ruchi Sanghvi [Real Story]
|
Ruchi, a professional engineer, holds the title of first female engineer at Facebook, a job that she recently left to start her own consulting firm. EIC’s Skylar Jackson sat down with Ruchi for a series of podcast interviews to learn a little more about Ruchi, her career, and what it means to be a woman of technology today.
When I was growing up in India my father was an engineer and I dreamt about one day taking over his company, despite being told that it was a man’s world. This dream was my inspiration, but let me clarify something. My father did not hire me. At first, I was nervous to be on my own, feeling as though my skills were not up to par or that I did not have enough to contribute. I now appreciate that opportunity to explore my options, which ultimately led me to Facebook where I was hired as the first female engineer in the company. The funny thing is I had no idea I was the first female engineer until the day I left.
Being a female in engineering can be tough. It can be lonely; sometimes you’re the only woman in a room full of men. But at the end of the day, there are a lot of positives and plenty of opportunities in technology. It is the closest thing to a democracy you will in find a professional environment. People of all different backgrounds, from art to computer science to music, collaborating and making something wonderful come to life for everyone to enjoy. That is one of the advantages of being a woman in a technical field. Half of the people that use and enjoy these products are women and as women we have the edge in creating these products for our peers.

Suggestions for Depicting Science, Engineering & Technology
|
Many young people are not aware of the vast diversity of career choices when it comes to science, engineering and technology and they may also not fully understand the practical and real life applications of the skills they learn in computer science or chemistry class. Consider these suggestions when creating your storylines that involve these topics:
- Students may not always be aware of how they can use the skills they learn in their classes in real life situations. Consider ways you can create situations where a teacher could explore real life applications and careers using experiments, field trips or hands-on examples to help educate their students.

Think about ways you can explore the background of featured science, engineering and technology professionals so that your audience can understand how they got to be where they are.
- When featuring professionals in science, engineering or technology attempt, where appropriate, to explore how their job fits into the bigger picture and how important it is to the way we live our daily lives.
