Issue #1, January 2014

Chairperson Corner

LManningGreetings ASIS NCC Members!

Things are off to a great start for 2014.  We started the year off with our January Chapter Meeting on January 14th.  Attendees were provided an update on ASIS International membership, the ASIS Foundation and a presentation on Human Implantable Microchips.

On January 16th, the Young Professionals hosted their first Happy Hour and Business Card Exchange.  More than 40 professionals attended the event held at Bilbo Baggins Global Restaurant in Alexandria.  If you missed this event, the Young Professionals plan to give you many more opportunities to join in this year.  Their next Networking event is planned for February 20th and will be held at the Old Ebbitt Grill in D.C.  The Young Professionals will be hosting events in various areas of the metro area to give everyone a chance to attend.  The group invites both the young and 'young at heart' to join in.

The Women in Security hosted a panel discussion "Career Growth:  How to Advance in the Security Field" on January 30th at KPMG in DC.  The panel included Karen Kiley, Vice-President, Building Operations & Security, Discovery Communications, Kara Sidener, Special Agent, FBI and Heather Green, Capital Regional Director, Defense Security Service.  This was an opportunity for attendees to learn more about how these professionals have succeeded in their respective careers and ask questions.  We look forward to more great events from the WIS group and invite everyone to participate.  While WIS benefits and programs are tailored to women, the group encourages and welcomes the participation of all ASIS members who are dedicated to the support of women in the security industry.

Our next Chapter meeting will be held on February 12th, 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Gannett/USA Today Headquarters in McLean, VA.  We are very excited to welcome Eric O'Neill as our guest speaker.  In 2001, Eric helped capture the most notorious spy in US history:  Robert Hanssen, a 25-year veteran of the FBI.  The true events of his life are the inspiration behind the critically acclaimed dramatic thriller Breach, starring Ryan Philippe.  We only have a limited number of seats for this event, so please be sure to register early.

As you can see, it is shaping up to be an exciting year for the NCC and we want you to be a part of it.  We look forward to seeing you at a Chapter meeting or event in the very near future.  If you are not able to attend in person, join us on LinkedIn to virtually network with your fellow Chapter members.

Best regards,

Loye A. Manning, CPP, PSP

January Meeting Recap

The ASIS National Capital Chapter's first chapter meeting of 2014 was held January 12th at Gannett/USA Today.  Fifty-one chapter members and guests joined us for an update from ASIS International Headquarters and a discussion on Human Implantable Microchips

Our first presenter, Eric Orr, ASIS Chapter Relations Manager started things off with a status of ASIS International and membership benefits.  Eric also provided some facts about the National Capital Chapter:

  • The NCC was chartered on April 22, 1957
  • The Chapter was the 11th chartered chapter of ASIS International
  • With 1,619 members the NCC is the largest chapter in the world
  • We had 276 new members join the NCC in 2013
  • And, our Chapter is a four time chapter award winner

Next, Barbara Buzzell, ASIS Foundation Director, provided an overview of all the great work being done by the ASIS Foundation.  The ASIS Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that invests in the security profession worldwide.  Support for the Foundation is achieved through financial contributions from individuals, chapters, and companies with an interest in the security profession.  Members are encouraged to learn more about the Foundation and how we can all give back to our profession.

Our final presentation of the day "Human Implantable Microchips & Access Control" was given by Gary Retherford, Owner, Six Sigma Security.  In 2003, Gary was involved with a project to provide a customer with a credential that could not be lost.  Eventually, a solution was implemented using the first ever use of implantable microchips in a place of employment as part of an access control system.  This project immediately appeared on MSNBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, CNN, as well as in major newspapers and news outlets around the world, and later became part of the CNBC special “Big Brother, Big Business”.  The presentation showed how the implantable microchip came into being, how it was used in this application, the subsequent public reaction, as well as its likely future.  A number of issues surrounding this technology were discussed including information security and potential health risks.

ASIS NCC Annual CPP® Review

Have you been considering CPP® certification? Stop putting it off and make this the year.

The National Capital Chapter will be offering its annual CPP® Review course for all members and security professionals interested in attaining Board Certification in Security Management through ASIS International as a Certified Protection Professional (CPP®). There is no requirement to be a member of ASIS or the National Capital Chapter to participate in the review or attain certification.

For years the world has recognized a need for competent professionals who can effectively manage complex security issues that threaten people and the assets of corporations, governments, and public and private institutions. As the emphasis on protecting people, property, and information increases, it has strengthened the demand for professional managers. To meet these needs, the ASIS International administers the Certified Protection Professional program.

Nearly 10,000 professionals have earned the designation of CPP®. This group of professionals has demonstrated its competency in the areas of security solutions and best-business practices through an intensive qualification and testing program. As a result, these men and women have been awarded the coveted designation of CPP®, and are recognized as proven leaders in their profession.

The course will span five Saturdays, March 8 – April 5, 2013, and will be held in the Reston, Virginia area. Mark your calendar and be looking for your invitation soon!

For those interested in the Physical Security Professional (PSP®) certification, the NCC will host its annual PSP® review in August.

Visit the ASIS International website to learn more about certification.

Member Spotlight:  Meet Chris Czarnowski

Chris CzarnowskiChris Czarnowski
National Account Manager
Tyco Integrated Security

Chris Czarnowski is currently serving as both the ASIS National Capital Chapter Secretary and Young Professional Liaison.

Chris joined ADT (now Tyco) as a part of their Early Career Training Development program.  It was approximately a year and a half long training program that exposed him to all parts of the business and security industry, specifically with in the Federal Government and DoD contractor space.  Approximately four months after graduating from the program, Chris moved into his current position and has been there since October 1st.  As a National Account Manager he is in a sales capacity serving as the primary point of contact for many customers.  His primary focus is on New England and Upstate New York, though he works nationwide, to include the DC area.  His group specializes in Federal Government applications and UL 2050 applications for DoD contractors.

Security Management was not something that Chris had envisioned for himself as a career but now finds that he enjoys it very much - there is always something new every day.  In Chris’s opinion, “The security industry is a field that is constantly evolving as technology and risks change.  In the end this industry will always exist; however, the scope and what we do day in and day out may change.”

Chris joined the ASIS National Capital Chapter as soon as he started working at Tyco, almost two years ago.  He wanted to get involved, meet others in the field and network and build on his industry knowledge.  He says that involvement in ASIS and the NCC has helped him by offering a common ground to speak about with other security industry personnel.

As the Liaison for the Young Professionals group within the National Capital Chapter, Chris highly recommends that anyone interested stop by a YP event.  The YPs usually have a monthly networking happy hour in rotating locations throughout the DC area.  Chris believes that this is a great way to build your network and meet other like minded people.  And the Young Professionals group is not just for those young in age, anyone that supports young professionals, is in a career transition or new to the industry is more than welcome to attend.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
Mark Twain
