Volume 3

June 2012

As of May 1, 2012, I will serve for AdvancED as both the Director of the AdvancED Montana State Office and Director of Public School System Accreditation.  Since I began, a great deal of time has been spent learning the new protocols of AdvancED, communicating these to our accredited schools and learning what my new roles are.  I spent May 21-25 in Tempe, Arizona meeting with the Vice President of System Accreditation, Dr. Warren Jacobson, who is my direct supervisor for my Director of Public School System Accreditation responsibilities. This was a great week of training. My primary role in this part of my job, at least for the next several months, is to be a resource to other directors in the Northwest as schools in their region request System Accreditation.  Dr. Jacobson and I will be providing training to AdvancED/NWAC State Directors at the AdvancED/NWAC meeting in Portland on June 18.  I have really enjoyed the experience and am delighted to be on board.

I am also excited about all of the great support resources, services, and professional learning opportunities that AdvancED has to offer the schools and school systems committed to the school improvement and accreditation process.  One such opportunity is our first annual fall school improvement conference.  The AdvancED/NWAC School Improvement Conference will be held on September 24-25 at the Holiday Inn in Bozeman, Montana.  We are expecting between 50 and 80 participants at this first conference. We have a lot of great sessions planned.  Dr. Pamela Salazar, AdvancED Nevada State Director, will be our keynote speaker on September 24.  On September 25 trainers from AdvancED will be introducing Montana school personnel to the process and protocols of accreditation through AdvancED.  I have been working with AdvancED personnel to provide you access to conference and registration information online via a dedicated web page.  This will be your one-stop shop for specific details about the conference.  We'll provide you the link to this event once fully established.   You'll also be able to access information from our Professional Development Calendar on the AdvancED Montana web page

Please continue to enjoy this's month's newsletter.  In this edition you'll find information on upcoming meetings and updates on the NWAC transition to AdvancED.  Please feel free to contact the AdvancED Montana Office if you have any questions or need assistance with your school improvement and accreditation needs.

Sincerely,

Dr. Daniel Sybrant, Director
AdvancED Montana

Council Meeting and Chair Training
I have secured contracts with the Holiday Inn in Bozeman, Montana for our summer State Council Meeting and External Review Chair Training on the evening of July 30, July 31, and August 1.  Sharon Bell, Associate Director for AdvancED Kansas will be our trainer for the External Review Chair Training.  We anticipate 30 people to attend this training.  Specific details about registering for the training is on our Professional Development Calendar on the AdvancED Montana web page.
AdvancED School System Accreditation
Currently there are six school systems in Montana that have expressed interest in exploring AdvancED School System Accreditation.  In fact, Troy Public Schools have officially submitted a letter of commitment to AdvancED.  I'm exciting about working with Troy Public Schools and other systems interested in the power of System Accreditation.  Troy will be the first school system in Montana to embark upon this process and their commitment to school improvement is worthy of sharing throughout our community.  You'll hear more about this system and others as we move through the process.
AdvancED 2012 International Summit

Registration for the AdvancED International Summit 2012 remains open. Upcoming Meetings
Here is a snapshot of my schedule of upcoming meetings that I will be attending to provide information on AdvancED Accreditation.

June 15: AA Principals Meeting in Butte, Montana for an update on the AdvancED Accreditation Process.

June 18: AdvancED/NWAC meeting in Portland to Assist Dr. Jacobson in training for School System Accreditation.

July 23-25: Lead Evaluator Training for AdvancED School System Accreditation in Georgia.  This training will enable me to lead an External Review team for School Systems Accreditation in the future.

July 30-August 1: Montana State Council Meeting and External Review Chair Training in Bozeman, Montana.

August 22-24: AdvancED All Staff Meeting in Chicago.

September 24-25: AdvancED/NWAC Montana School Improvement Conference in Bozeman.

October 17-19: I have requested to be a presenter of a workshop regarding School System Accreditation at the Montana Conference of Educational Leadership in Billings, Montana.  AdvancED Montana also will sponsor booth space at this conference.

Unique State Structure

Currently, there are 87 schools in Montana, including Northwest partner schools, that are accredited through AdvancED/NWAC. This total also includes five new schools that received readiness visits in April.  As I mentioned earlier, I am working with six school systems that have expressed interest in AdvancED School System Accreditation. Three of these systems currently are accredited in their elementary and high schools.

During the 2012-2013 school year, I plan to schedule time to present at regional superintendent and principal meetings throughout the state about the AdvancED Accreditation Process and highlight School System Accreditation.  This certainly will take some time on the road as nationally, Montana is ranked fourth in total square miles, (147,000) and ranked 44th in population, (998,000). So, I just might be seeing you along the way!
