AFP-HR Vision Statement

To be recognized as the premier fundraising resource for professionals to learn, collaborate and grow together for a vibrant Hampton Roads community.

President's Letter
Head Shot - 2017 Kenda Council 2

Greetings AFP-Hampton Roads Chapter Members,

Whew! It’s been a “whopper-doozie” of a month hasn’t it? If you are anything like me, you need to hear the following:

● Smile and laugh - you need it!
● Breath - you are going to be ok.
● Believe in yourself - you can do it!
● Be creative.
● Call your donors and check on them and tell them what your non-profit is doing during the crisis.
● Trust your instincts.
● Do the right thing - always.
● Appreciate the time you have for yourself and your family - smell the roses!

As you know, these are challenging times! We are working hard as a chapter to pivot and communicate with you as we are making changes and new plans. While we were very disappointed we had to cancel our March membership pop-up session and our April luncheon, we were pleased to offer a free online session to our members in March. Thanks to AFP-HR Chapter Member Patrick Belcher for creating an online seminar in March for our members to get together and share best practices for fundraising during this difficult time.

We received so much positive feedback on the March AFP-HR online seminar that we are going to host another free, members only call on April 15, 2020 at 3:30 p.m.. On the call, members will be able to ask questions and share the best practices they are using to raise funds during this difficult time. While there is no charge to virtually attend this event, you will need to register to dial in.

As the Virginia stay-at-home order was set through June 10th, we will not be able to host our May Donor Retention Seminar for professional development.

In good news…congratulations to Nicole Pellegrino, 2019 AFP-HR President, the 2019 Board and the 2019 chapter members as our AFP-HR Chapter recently received the Ten Star Award! Every year AFP honors chapters for achieving goals that align with key objectives in its long-range strategic plan. Chapters receive the Ten Star Award for performing specific activities designed to increase professionalism within fundraising and public awareness of the importance of philanthropy. Just one-third of all AFP chapters are named Ten Star Chapters, so our Hampton Roads Chapter is one of a select group of chapters to earn this honor. Kudos and congratulations to our chapter!

The AFP International Conference (ICON) took place from March 29-31st. While the conference was originally planned to be held in Baltimore, AFP offered the conference virtually. I attended the conference on behalf of our chapter and learned a great deal. I was grateful for the chapter’s support and would urge you to consider attending the AFP ICON Conference in 2021 (April 18-20 in Minneapolis, Minnesota).

Life goes on, right?! We are promoting AFP’s Annual Campaign called the “Be the Cause Campaign.” More information on the campaign can be found within the newsletter. I encourage you to make a gift of $5, $10, $20 or more - whatever you can do to help AFP. Remember, a portion of what we donate comes back to our chapter to help us host programs for our chapter! I appreciate your consideration and hope you’ll join me in supporting AFP!

Here’s how to donate:
Text AFP to 56512 to make a gift through your phone to the U.S. Foundation (powered by Give by Cell). Or
Click Here to may your gift online today and support our chapter

Please take a moment to read through this month’s newsletter. Thank you for your continued support of our AFP Chapter!

Keep up the good work,

Kenda G. Council
2020 President, AFP-HR

Or
Click Here (https://afpglobal.org/donate) to make your gift online today and support our both AFP Global and our Hampton Roads chapter. NOW is the time! Please consider making your BE the CAUSE annual gift to the AFP Foundations for Philanthropy. A portion of your gift will help our chapter continue to provide scholarships, pop ups and socials, educational programs, and expert speakers.

The AFP Foundations for Philanthropy support you and nearly 32,000 AFP members around the world with education, scholarships, leadership development, research, and mentoring while maintaining the highest ethical standards and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Your gift to BE the CAUSE will make a difference and support the ongoing and important work of the nonprofit fundraising community.

THANK YOU!

Potential worsening of economic impact related to coronavirus

With the recent coronavirus epidemic, market conditions may worsen. This global health situation is creating global economic issues that may affect your donors (individuals and corporations) now and/or in the future. As a fundraising professional, it is key that you stay informed and appropriately modify tactics and strategies, especially as it relates to those with a fiscal year ending June 30. Please find the below articles for your reading and keep reading to ensure you remain knowledgeable as you have a dialogue with your donors and prospects.
