BoxPower Takes Additional Steps in 2021 Towards Clean and Reliable Energy!
by Alisha Wilson, Communications Student Assistant and Outreach Ambassador for the Water, Energy and Technology (WET) Center.
As the wave of the new year washes over our center, we often take the time to reflect on the growth of not only our center and its programs but also the successes of the business ventures who have engaged with us in many capacities over the years. In the spring of 2018, BoxPower, along with 12 other companies, participated in the Water, Energy and Technology (WET) Center's second Valley Ventures cohort, graduating in June 2018.

BoxPower specializes in manufacturing rapidly deployable solar-diesel generators housed in 20-ft shipping containers for disaster relief and off-grid industries. Over the years, BoxPower has accomplished many things, such as providing energy utility solutions in Alaska, deploying their microgrids for emergency response in Puerto Rico, and more recently, collaborating with Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) on creating their first remote grid in a high fire-threat area just outside of Yosemite National Park.

“We are proud to be able to support companies like these who work tirelessly to reach a more sustainable future. Our role here at the WET Center is to offer support and resources to companies who are looking to change the dynamics of the water, energy, and technology industry in California and beyond," according to Helle Petersen, Director of Water, Energy, and Technology Center.

In a recent update made by BoxPower in December 2021, the company reported that in June of 2021, BoxPower built and installed PG&E’s first hybrid renewable standalone power system offering a new outlook on utility services. Since 2000, an estimated 1.5M wildfires have occurred in California alone, 224 exceeding 100,000 acres burned and 14 exceeding 500,000 acres burned (reported by Congressional Research Services in Oct. 2021). California's wildfire history paired with its lofty goals of reaching zero-carbon electricity by 2045 demands solutions like BoxPower's be top of mind as the state moves towards more clean and reliable energy solutions. Understanding the role that they can play in the lives of everyday people in rural and urban areas across California, BoxPower made it their mission to offer a new and efficient way to look at power.

As we head into the new year with strong ambitions and inspirations, we look forward to seeing how BoxPower and our many other innovative Valley Ventures alumni, members, and supporters succeed in 2022.
