President's Letter
Head Shot - 2017 Kenda Council 2

Happy New Year!

Wow, what an amazing year AFP had in 2019! We hosted two phenomenal community events - our Fundraising Leadership Symposium and National Philanthropy Day, conducted a membership survey, revised our chapter's Strategic Plan and hosted many fun social gatherings for our chapter members!

Thank you to our Past President, Nicole Pellegrino, and our 2019 Board of Directors for their dedication and commitment to our chapter. I also wish to express our appreciation to Joy Eyrolles who rolled off our board after serving as our Treasurer for many years. Finally, please join me in thanking Virginia Thumm with Virginia Fundraising Consultants for sponsoring our speaker program in 2019 as well as 2020!

Our 2020 Board of Directors is looking forward to working hard this year to make this year our best yet! Thank you to everyone who completed our membership survey. Based on your feedback, we’ve adjusted our programs for the year.

The AFP Hampton Roads Chapter Board of Directors and Programing Committee are very excited to present you with a new format for your 2020 programs. This means you can pick what works best for your schedule. In addition to luncheons, AFP will offer members-only, free, pop up sessions during breakfast or happy hours, at various locations throughout Hampton Roads. These pop up sessions will be less formal than a luncheon, and offer the ability to do group work and network throughout the session. AFP Hampton Roads will continue to offer Membership Socials, as well as half-day and full-day seminars, for a deep dive into the topics that you care about most. You told us what you want, and we listened—join us!

Our first meeting of the year will take place on Tuesday, January 28th from 9:00-11:00 am at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s Main Campus in downtown Suffolk (3373 Pruden Boulevard, Suffolk). A continental breakfast will be provided. Come and hear from Blake A. Marton, CFRE, Director of Leadership Giving at CHKD about Creating and Evaluating Effective Direct Mail Packages. Following his presentation, you are invited to take a tour of the NSA Main Campus and visit NSA’s 34th Annual Art Show & Sale (featuring over 1,000 pieces of artwork - flat art, jewelry, pottery and more - from local and regional artists with pricing ranging from $25 - $5,000!).

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as President. If you have any questions or suggestions for our chapter, please feel free to contact me at kcouncil@nsacademy.org. I look forward to working with you this year!

All my best,

Kenda G. Council
2020 President, AFP-HR

A direct mail solicitation is often the first interaction a constituent has with the development office; thus it is vital to create pieces that engage the reader, build trust and encourage philanthropic outcomes. Join us for a working breakfast meeting where you will refine your skills on how to develop a strong case for support using proven techniques, how to implement direct mail strategies that focus on donor behavior, and how to analyze the effectiveness of direct mail solicitations. Attendees will work together to critically analyze direct mail solicitation samples.

Government Relations
2018 Tax Logo

On December 20, 2019, the president signed into law the Setting Every Community up for Retirement Enhancement Act of 2019 (SECURE) which will went into effect on January 1, 2020.

The SECURE Act increases the age retirees must begin taking taxable withdrawals from their retirement savings from 70 ½ to 72. It does not increase the age an IRA owner can take a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). That age remains at 70 ½. This may cause confusion among your donors.

Next Steps:
Review your list of donors and identify those who may be interested in stretching their IRA distributions using a testamentary charitable remainder trust or a testamentary charitable gift annuity. Reach out to them and begin the conversation.
