September 12th Happy Hour & Dinner Meeting - Recruiting from Non Traditional Sources
According to the Prison Policy Institute, the U.S. justice system controls almost 7 million people, over half of whom are on probation. It is known that meaningful, living wage employment has a direct effect on recidivism rates, but how does that affect you and your company?

As more and more states and cities are implementing "ban the box laws" and the tight job market makes hiring more difficult, companies have an opportunity to make a direct impact on their communities, open their workforces to increased diversity of thoughts and ideas, all while staying in compliance with ever changing laws. Join us on September 12th as Kalen McAllister and George Lombardi from Laughing Bear Bakery discuss how they have used their past experiences in working with the MO prison system to create a successful bakery business hiring ex-offenders and how you can apply their policies and practices to your organization. Click here for more information and to register.

The Deaf Community Identifies as a Culture, not a Disability
by Shelly Tisius, Inclusion & Diversity Committee

How you interact with Deaf employees or customers may need to change. Did you know that the Deaf sign language using community considers themselves a cultural group and not a disabled group? Did you know that there are vast linguistic differences between English and American Sign Language (ASL)? Did you know that each Deaf person has their own language preferences, so a one-size-fits all approach to communication may not create understanding? This blog article brought to you by MT & Associates | Sign Language Interpreting, and video by NPR, provides a snapshot into these cultural differences.
