With a population of 42 million, Algeria is the industrial powerhouse of North Africa. It is the largest country in Africa and one of the richest in terms of natural resources. Although the economy is currently dominated by the hydrocarbons sector, Algeria is moving quickly to diversify its economy and is emerging as an attractive market for US trade and investment.

On July 6, 2018, the Bilateral US-Arab Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Tunisian Talents United (TTU), held the first annual Entrepreneurship Forum, convening more than 60 global thought-leaders and decision makers from Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States.

The forum featured a special address by The Honorable Linda Thomas-Greenfield who provided insight on Africa’s developing entrepreneurship ecosystem, drawing on her experiences as the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs (2013-2017). Following Thomas-Greenfield's remarks, His Excellency Dr. Slim Feriani, Minister of Industry and SMEs, Republic of Tunisia, reinforced the country's commitment to achieving innovation-led growth by showcasing ample opportunities for U.S. business investment.

At the Entrepreneurship Forum luncheon, His Excellency Faycal Gouia, Ambassador of Tunisia to the United States, offered a meaningful address on the importance of a U.S.-Tunisia partnership before introducing Dr. Adel Chaouch as the new Honorary Consul of Tunisia in Houston. A member of the Bilateral Chamber's Board of Directors, Dr. Chaouch reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring prosperous bilateral ties between the respective countries.

The Headworks process team led by Dr. Somnath Basu, formerly a senior technologist of the Shell Oil Co. Global Water team, developed a MBBR-based high rate treatment process for these difficult wastewaters.

MBBR is an innovative and state-of-the-art process that overcomes many challenges associated with refractory and toxic chemicals by promoting their breakdown by the action of microbial population present in the reactor in the form of fixed films.
