In Memoriam:  Donald J. Fergus

Donald J. FergusSadly, we were recently made aware of the unexpected passing of ASIS NCC member Donald J. Fergus on Monday, March 17, 2014.

Don was born in Montreal, Canada on July 29th to the late John J. Fergus and to Elizabeth Kellum.

Don lived in Orange County, California before moving to New York City where he met his wife of 32 years, Kathleen. His career in technology allowed Don and Kathleen to see the world, even allowing them to live in Brussels and London before settling them in Leesburg, where they lived for the past seven years. He spent the past two years as the Chief Technology Officer for Patriot Technologies.

Don was a member of the IT Security Council and served as both Vice-Chair and Chair of the Council.  He was a member of the Masons and the Moose Lodge. Don’s Canadian roots made him an avid hockey fan, always cheering on his favorite team, the Washington Capitals. He loved his CTSV car and looked forward to Friday night pizza from Fireworks with his wife.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen; mother, Elizabeth Kellum; sisters, Cheryl Fergus and Judi Carboni; nieces, Lindsey, Stacey and Kim; and many loving family members and friends.

Chapter Chair Message

DC Cherry BlossomsSpring is finally here!  Hopefully we are done with the snow and can look forward to warmer weather and the Cherry Blossoms.  That's not all that we have to look forward to ... the ASIS National Capital Chapter has a number of events planned that we want to invite you to attend.

Each year, the ASIS NCC awards scholarships students in security management, administration of justice and programs allied to security at the associate, baccalaureate and graduate levels with cash scholarships.  During the year, the chapter raises money through donations, selling 50/50 tickets at meetings and hosting certification review courses.  Awarding scholarships has been a tradition of the National Capital Chapter since 1983, and we are excited to be able to continue that tradition. It is an important opportunity for us to make a contribution to the community beyond our own membership.

Scholarship Night will be held the evening of April 16th at Gannett/USA Today Headquarters in McLean, VA.  In addition to the scholarship presentations, you will have the opportunity to hear from a panel of Young Professionals moderated by Chris Czarnowski, the Chapter Secretary and the Chapter’s Liaison to the ASIS Young Professionals, who will engage in a discussion with other Young Professionals about how they entered the security field, opportunities available and some of the challenges facing Young Professionals as they begin their security careers.

Our April Chapter Meeting will be held April 23rd, also at Gannett/USA Today Headquarters in McLean, VA.  Please join us when Mr. Matthew McCabe, Senior Vice President from Marsh, will discuss cyber threats, who’s behind them, and their motivations.  He will also speak about the thriving regulatory environment that has developed as a result of these threats.  He will talk about nation states, terrorist organizations, hackers, and common criminals all who are attacking the networks.

As we continue to look forward, we have Law Enforcement Appreciation in May and our full day Security Seminar in June.  Be looking for more information about these events coming soon.

I encourage you to help us keep ASIS International and the National Capital Chapter strong so that we can continue to bring you value.  The strength of ASIS is the knowledge and experience of our members that is brought to networking and educational programs.  If you have not had a chance to renew your membership, there is still time to reinstate your membership.  If you meet security professionals who are not yet members, share with them the benefits of membership.  And remember, we are a professional organization of volunteers; so, your participation and contribution is key to our success!  If you are interested in volunteering or getting involved in some way, please contact me at chair@asis-capital.org.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Member Spotlight:  LaNile Dalcour

LaNile DalcourLaNile Dalcour
Director of Security/National Training Coordinator/Business Continuity Plan Coordinator
Brookfield Office Properties

Mr. Lanile Dalcour has been in the security/life safety industry for 22 years with a primary focus in the Commercial Real Estate field.  Currently, Mr. Dalcour serves as the Director of Security for the National Capital Region / National Training Coordinator for Brookfield properties.  He has served in this role for the last 7 years.  In this role, he provides oversight for the overall security and life safety program for all of Brookfield DC, Virginia and Maryland regions.  His duties include overseeing the day to day operations of the security vendor and emergency preparedness training for all tenants and Brookfield staff.  In addition, he is the National Training Coordinator tasked with scheduling, coordinating and moderating Brookfield’s annual National Tabletop Exercise during “National Preparedness Month”.   Furthermore, he serves as liaison for the mass communication system and Business Continuity Plan coordinator where he is responsible for the rollout and maintenance of the plan.

In addressing some of the prominent security challenges associated with his current roles, he revealed that the toughest challenge is making sure staff and tenants are motivated to be prepared for emergencies.  With a strong passion for emergency preparedness, he spends a significant period of time providing training for staff and tenants.   Nonetheless, his key concern is the staff and tenant’s preparedness level in the event of an actual emergency, in addition to reliable Access Control systems.

Mr. Dalcour started in the security industry as a security officer and took advantage of opportunities for training and development.  In the early part of his career, he met Carlos Villarreal CST.  Mr. Villarreal was a member of ASIS International and also Director of Security at the Sears Tower.   In reflecting on his success in the security industry, he notes “What I love most about security management is the opportunity to teach and train young security officers. I believe people like me are needed in the industry as motivation for bottom line employees. I turned my job as a Security Officer into the role I have today strictly by working hard. I actually still consider myself a security officer at heart”.

With regards to the many benefits derived from his affiliation with ASIS International, Mr. Dalcour confesses that “ASIS International has given me access to an amazing resource of contacts and information. I have truly benefitted from being a member of ASIS International”.  As a career security professional, and a member of ASIS and the NCC Chapter for 9 years, he highly recommends the security industry as a profession referencing our service to the public by preparing facilities and providing training for emergencies.

Mr. Dalcour asserts that the ASIS annual conference is a “must attend” event for professional development. He believes that the exhibit hall and resources provide a venue to stay current with the most updated technology, while the breakout sessions are often priceless regarding gaining insight from the experts that speak on prominent subjects that affect the security professional and their responsibilities.

“Wherever you turn, you can find someone who needs you. Even if it is a little thing, do something for which there is no pay but the privilege of doing it. Remember, you don't live in a world all of your own.”

- Albert Schweitzer
