President's Message
We are currently wrapping up our Annual Sponsorship drive and are overwhelmed by the enthusiasm the business community has shown in support of our Chapter. A heartfelt thank you to all that have contributed and to Laura Shaw for organizing this effort. Well done!
As I am writing, Hurricane Harvey’s full impact is still not known - rain is still falling in Houston, TX. What we do know is that the families impacted will most likely never be the same. As an IFMA Chapter, we have strong ties to Texas and more specifically Houston, home of IFMA’s Service Center of Excellence.
Your Board has discussed the situation and have unanimously agreed to create a tiger team led by Amanda Frendberg to develop ideas for a Chapter-wide response to this devastating natural disaster.
More to come, but just wanted to let you know that your Greater Triangle Chapter is working toward engaging the impacted community.
If you haven’t yet signed up for our August 31 Volunteer Appreciation and Get To Know The Committees event, you still have time! Go to the website, sign up today and be inspired!

Meet Justin Dodd: 2017 Recipient of GTC’s Mike Bradley Memorial Golf Tournament IFMA Foundation Scholarship
As we announced in July’s GTC newsletter, Justin Dodd, who is pursuing his Master’s Degree in Construction and Facility Management at UNC-Charlotte, has been awarded the $8000 GTC-sponsored IFMA Foundation scholarship this year.
Our Chapter funds this scholarship from proceeds coming from the annual Mike Bradley Memorial Golf Tournament. Todd Taintor, Co-Chair of the Golf Tournament Committee said, “This golf tournament is one of, if not the best attended and supported, IFMA Triangle Chapter events each year.” Over 125 members and guests participate with the tournament registration typically filled to capacity within minutes of the posting. Associate members who have committed to Gold, Platinum, Ruby, or Onyx sponsorships for GTC automatically receive tournament slots. Next year’s tournament is scheduled for April 25, 2018.
Justin is from Charlotte, NC. His prior education and work experience will serve him well in his chosen profession of Facility Management; his original Bachelor and Master’s Degrees were in Psychology, he was in sales for several years, and then transitioned to photography, concentrating mostly on construction sites. That inspired him to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering Technology, which piqued an interest in Facility Management.
Justin is particularly interested in benchmarking, performance management, and sustainability (he has earned a LEED Green Associate designation). He’s gained practical experience while at UNC-Charlotte, working with Dr. Jake Smithwick on an IFMA report update. He’s found the project to be invaluable in terms of experience, saying, “As a graduate student in Facility Management at UNC-Charlotte, I have had the privilege of being one of the main researchers and developers of the new 2017 IFMA O&M Benchmarking Report (an update of the 2009 O&M report #32). The report includes specific cost information on janitorial, maintenance, utilities, and FM organizational structure across a diverse spectrum of geographic locations and industry types.”
He and Dr. Smithwick have offered to present the findings for one of our 2018 GTC meetings. Justin plans to be at our September luncheon meeting and will attend IFMA’s World Workplace in Houston. Justin will receive his degree in December.
