David Hammargren and Inga Schuchard secured a judgment of more than $161,000 for their clients, homeowners who contracted for construction of a new home in Brainerd. The homeowners succeeded on their claims against their original construction contractor after finding that the framing, concrete and other work at the partially constructed home were below industry standard and not in compliance with the Minnesota building code. The court also dismissed the contractor’s mechanic’s lien for more than $110,000 as intentionally overstated and invalid.
Jim Sander presented a seminar entitled "Preserving Payment Rights through Better Contracts" March 14, 2017. The presentation, given as part of the Builders Association of the Twin Cities' Contractor University, focused on how contracts allocate risks to contractors and how to recognize and manage those risks in construction contracts.
David Hammargren moderated a panel discussion on the local construction economy for members of the Construction Management Association of America’s Minnesota Chapter on Feb. 9, 2017.
On March 7, 2017, Rob Stefonowicz and Bryan Huntington presented at Contractor University, hosted and organized by the Builders Association of the Twin Cities. Rob and Bryan presented the topic “When is a Development Fee Legit.” This course analyzed statutory and constitutional restrictions on municipal and county authority to impose exactions on new development.
On Feb. 16, 2017 David Hammargren presented a one-hour program on managing risk with surety bonds and subcontractor default insurance. The presentation was given at the Associated Builders and Contractors Safety and Construction Conference in St. Cloud, Minn.
David Hammargren taught a two-hour class on Feb. 17, 2017 on litigation, arbitration and mechanics’ liens. The class was offered in conjunction with Rochester Area Builders.
