Message From the President
Jim Paul
Welcome back Springtime and Cardinals! Forbes Magazine just announced its first-ever ranking of America's Best Employers. 503 employers to be exact (I suspect that employers 501 through 503 lobbied hard to expand the list just far enough to be included). Several of our own St. Louis-based companies (and HRMA members) were recognized for their employee relations successes and relatively happy workplaces:

#13
Washington University in Saint Louis
#24 Edward Jones
#122 Mercy Health
#184 Ameren
#366 Anheuser-Busch InBev
#405 Panera Bread Company
#482
Emerson Electric

Tinder for Jobs
As the world becomes more and more mobile, people are relying on more apps than ever before. The job-seekers are constantly online, and recruiters should be, too. A new startup app called "nspHire" is working to be a source of mobile job and job-seeker discovery by matching job seekers with employers based on key criteria such as function, industry, education, salary and location. The app has been compared as the job seekers version of the dating app Tinder, including the ability to "swipe" right and left and even chat live with a recruiter. Will recruitment apps take over as a main way to recruit top talent? Only time will tell. Check out the startup spotlight interview conducted by Jeremy Roberts, SPHR here, or learn more at the nspHire website here.

People With "Invisible Disabilities" Fight for Understanding
Some disabilities are more obvious than others. Many are immediately apparent, especially if someone relies on a wheelchair or cane. But others - known as "invisible" disabilities - are not. People who live with them face particular challenges in the workplace and in their communities. Click here to read the full article or listen to the NPR interview.

Update: NLRB Ambush Election Rules Take Effect April 14, 2015
By Dean Kpere-Daibo

On Tuesday, April 14, 2015 the National Labor Relations Board's ("NLRB") new rules regarding union representation cases will take effect. These rules were adopted to reduce the amount of time between the filing of a petition and a union election. The NLRB champions the rule changes as modernizing the union election process, but the real effect of these adopted rules is employers will have less time to educate its employees on the pros and cons of unionization after a petition is filed. Domestic Violence Leave Bill Proposed in Senate
By Dean Kpere-Daibo

The Missouri Senate has before it proposed legislation, Senate Bill 130, which would provide limited unpaid leave to those who have been affected by domestic violence. If the legislation passes into law, Missouri would join a growing number of states and municipalities that require private employers to allow some type of leave or other reasonable accommodation to employees who are victims of domestic violence. Currently, there is no federal requirement for this type of leave. Click here to read the full article.
