China's Economy in Transition: From External to Domestic Rebalancing

China’s current account surplus has declined to nearly a third of its pre-crisis peak. While this is a major reduction in China’s external imbalance, it has not been accompanied by a decisive shift toward consumption-based growth. The increasing reliance on investment as the main driver of China’s growth raises questions about whether the current growth model is sustainable. This book studies various aspects of the rebalancing underway in China and highlights policy lessons for achieving a stable, sustainable, and inclusive transformation of the growth model.

     Indonesia

Indonesia: Sustaining Growth During Global Volatility
Over the past decade, Indonesia has developed into an important regional and global economy, as well as an active participant in the G20. The chapters in this book document the substantial improvements in the quality of macroeconomic policy that Indonesia has achieved, while also clearly laying out an agenda of measures that should be taken to safeguard these gains and further lower vulnerabilities going forward. Rather than just demonstrating progress in key macroeconomic indicators, the contributors have delved into the ways that global volatility, especially since 2008, has affected Indonesia and how that country has adjusted its policies to meet the new challenges.

Rebalancing Growth in Asia: Economic Dimensions for China
This book analyzes the importance for Asia of rebalancing its growth model toward domestic demand, and what such a rebalancing would entail. The nature of the challenge differs across regional economies, as some, like China, need to raise private consumption while others, like the ASEAN economies, need to raise investment. Given that China accounts for such a large part of the Asian economy, and that its story is such a central focus in the global policy debate, the book discusses various aspects of the rebalancing challenge in China.
