President's Message
Workplace Violence and Situational Awareness Training
"What's got John so on edge today, is something wrong with him?"
"He is very angry."
"Yeah I heard him talking in the parking lot about wanting to get even with Jim for his comment in the board meeting."
"Do you know if there's something else going on that would’ve caused him to be this angry?"
The next day John walks to the office with a machine gun and now you have a situation. Could this have been prevented? Do you and your coworkers know what to do?
As you go about your day-to-day business, it is hard to think that there is a possibility of violence in your workplace; however, it can happen at any time, place, job, size, or company. This is why you must be aware of warning signs to watch for and ways to be prepared if it does happen. As a facility manager, you are responsible for your coworkers to make sure they know what to do if such a situation occurs.
Being aware of your surroundings and how to react is a good start, but you also need to educate your coworkers on what they should do. Last August, we talked about Run/Hide/Fight as what you should be looking to teaching your coworkers. In April, we are going to take that to the next level and give some additional training on how to act in these situations. We are going to have a professional law enforcement officer teach us how to react in specific situations and what the best approach may be if you are faced with an active assailant.
Please join us on April 5th for the Professional Only Event where we will discuss specific approaches for such an incident. Our goal is to educate you on how to react to such a situation and make you aware of the type of training that is available for your coworkers.
