Message from the President

Dear HRMA:

Summer is coming to a close and I hope everyone had a chance to recharge and relax! The Marino household has been blessed by the arrival of our second child (and first girl!), so things have been very exciting! The arrival of Princess Marino got me thinking about balancing priorities in our personal and professional lives. We all want to be our best selves at work, at home and with the multitude of other interests we have pulling us several different directions. Sometimes it can be difficult, but I do not think success in one aspect of our lives means something else we care about suffers. Case in point, so many of our volunteers are not only leaders in the HR field who also dedicate countless hours to planning such things as HRMA’s Annual Conference, but they are also some of the best mothers, fathers, spouses and siblings that I have had the pleasure of meeting.

Hopefully by now you have heard about two of HRMA’s newest initiatives – the Taste of Teambuilding Cookbook & Member Directory and HRMA’s First Annual HR Salary Benefits Survey. The Taste of Teambuilding Cookbook & Directory will be chocked full of great activities, icebreakers and activities you can use to engage your respective teams. We are currently looking for submissions to include in the Cookbook, so please click here to share any teambuilding ideas! Also, last month we launched HRMA’s First Annual HR Salary/Benefits survey. We wanted to provide our membership with a broad overview of St. Louis' HR marketplace - please click here to participate. Participants will get a free copy of the survey that we hope to roll out at our Annual Leadership Conference.

Speaking of HRMA's Annual Leadership conference, registration is now open, so please sign-up. The Conference is set for October 27, 2017 at Ameristar St. Charles - it should be another great event!

I look forward to seeing you all soon!

John Marino

August 16 Symposium - Supporting Employees' Mental Well-Being by Integrating Trauma-Informed Care Into HR Practices
http://www.socialwork.career/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Trauma_informed_care.png
As focusing on supporting the overall well-being of the workforce becomes a growing function and expectation of HR professionals, we need to know how to handle those difficult and sensitive conversations surrounding employees' mental wellness. Whether it's related to a hidden disability, stress from the job, or something from an employee's personal life, there can be many contributing factors that may hinder an employee's ability to be productive and engaged. By using what is known as a Trauma-Informed approach, HR professionals can have a more positive outcome in addressing issues related to employee mental well-being. Alive and Well STL is a community-wide effort focused on reducing the impact of toxic stress and trauma on our health and well-being. Their goal is to help educate organizations and the community about Trauma-Informed Care practices. The presenters will give us a background on trauma, its impact on the human body and mental well-being, and practical ways HR professionals can address these issues at all different points throughout the employee life cycle.  Click here for more information and register.
