TECH COUNCIL CURRENT v2
Dear readers, February 2019

In its sixth year, the Wisconsin Tech Summit has become a valuable forum for major companies in search of innovation to supplement their own efforts and emerging companies in search of business partners. The March 18 summit at Green Bay’s Lambeau Field has added significance this year, as it represents the budding alliance between the Packers, Microsoft, TitleTownTech, the UW-Green Bay and other community leaders to build a stronger regional economy. It also reflects our own partnership with the Wisconsin Healthcare Business Forum, which fosters better connections between healthcare providers and the “producers” of innovative ideas. Stay tuned for more news about the summit and how you may take part. If you’re an emerging company, don’t forget to apply by Feb. 20 for “speed dates” with the 20 major companies.

Sincerely,

Tom Still, president

GUEST COLUMN: South of the controversial border: Mexico is a tech player

Mexico is a nation of contrasting images and clichés, both positive and negative. Thoughts of our southern neighbor often conjure images of outstanding cuisine, tasty libations such as tequila and Corona and beautiful beaches.

Yet today, people around the world, including Americans, are often more prone to ponder Mexico’s more negative stereotypes. The name “Mexico” may trigger thoughts of corruption, cartels, poverty and more, but there is another Mexico we often hear little about.

Since the implementation of free trade in the North American region in 1994, economic relations between the United States, Canada and Mexico have grown exponentially. Today Mexico is America’s third-largest trading partner only behind China and Canada while Wisconsin depends only on Canada more than it does Mexico with regards to foreign trade.

GUEST COLUMN: If you think your email is secure, think again!

There are many things making the news headlines these days. There is one story that isn't getting the attention it deserves; that being, the war to secure your email.

Attacks on email have been occurring for years, but the attack activity since March 2018 has been unprecedented. Hackers are successfully compromising user accounts at an alarming rate and expanding their attacks by making use of the accounts they compromise. The purpose of the attacks varies: Some are meant to steal money, some are meant to embarrass you, others are meant to extort you into paying a ransom to the hacker.

The sophistication is getting better, and the hackers are leveraging cloud-based technologies to aid them in their attacks. They are making use of data on the “dark web” about you to make their attacks more credible by piecing together information about you.
