Welcome to the first edition of Library Plus, an all-new regular Library update.

While our doors are currently closed, our services are very much open and available to you and your students. We have a lot going on – acquiring new resources, consulting with staff and students, teaching online workshops, and planning for upcoming trimesters.

The newsletter aims to keep you up to date with everything we are doing and what we have planned. It will also address a range of wider issues that affect research and researchers.

What's new

• Griffith's 3-Minute Thesis competition will be fully online this year. The Library's Yuri Banens has created two short clips - Filming your video and Editing your video - to help you create your video and help your entry stand out. Find out more about the competition, including dates, on the 3MT pages.


• The Australian Research Data Commons will fund proposals under their Australian Data Partnerships program to support the development of high quality, national scale, multi-institutional data collections that support leading edge research. EOIs opened on 7 July, and awards will be made in December for a January, 2021 start. Read more.

Open scholarship

• Monitor the reach of open access policies worldwide with SPARC's world mapping of funder and institutional policies.


• The UK has released its Research and Development Roadmap, with a strong emphasis on incentivising open data sharing, where appropriate, and mandating open publication.


• Massachusetts Institute of Techology (MIT) has cut off negotiations with Elsevier in support of open access principles. Read why they made the decision.

Pandemic resources

• How is the COVID-19 pandemic affecting research culture? Digital Science have compiled a report with some staggering figures. More than 3,100 clinical trials are underway, upwards of 42,700 scholarly articles have been published, and 420 datasets have been assembled. Read the full report.


• Much of the COVID-19 research material has appeared in preprint form. Europe PMC provides the full text of its COVID-19 related preprints.

Top Tip

Want to create a higher resolution PDF version of a Word or Powerpoint file? Instead of saving your document or presentation as a PDF, go to Print and then select Microsoft Print to PDF instead of your usual printer or print queue. You will be prompted to provide a title for this new file. Creating a PDF in this way will greatly enhance the resolution of any images in the PDF output.

• Trimester 2 reading lists are now available for course convenors to work on. You can quickly add a wide variety of resources to your lists, as well as request digitisation of print resources. Lists can be customised by week, module, topic or assessment item. Read more.
