School and District Improvement Plan Documentation Information for the 2017-18 School Year

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE), in partnership with AdvancED, will continue to keep the ASSIST™ web-based platform open for school and district improvement-associated document submission for the 2017-18 school year.

What you need to know:

  • All schools in Michigan will continue to complete and submit the School Improvement Plan
(SIP) in ASSIST. Users can either update the SIP using the Goals and Plans or complete and upload the Unpacking Tool or the abbreviated template document within the Assurances tab. Submission of the SIP will meet the Public Act 25 requirement.
  • Single Building Districts have the option of completing Goals and Plans or the Abbreviated template. Either submission must align and support the Consolidated Application and have sufficient detail to obtain state approval of line items for the corresponding federal grant.
  • Districts will continue to complete Goals and Plans in ASSIST.
  • All districts and schools will be assigned the Program Evaluation Tool.
  • Schools will no longer be required to complete and submit the School Systems Review (SSR) diagnostic. Districts will not be required to complete and submit the District Requirement Report/District Systems Review (DSR) diagnostic. The SSR and DSR will be available in ASSIST for schools and districts to use, but will not be assigned tasks.
  • AdvancED accredited entities will no longer be required to complete the Self Assessment or the Interim Self Assessment reports.
  • All ASSIST users will have access to the available eProve™ surveys, and the eProve™ Effective Learning Environments Observation Tool® (eleot®).
  • The Title I diagnostics will be completed when directed by the Office of Field Services.
  • AdvancED accredited entities will be using the eProve™ platform to submit their documentation associated with the Engagement Review process (once every five years) when directed by the AdvancED Michigan Office.
  • The MDE School Improvement Support unit will provide technical assistance and support for ASSIST users. We encourage ASSIST users to attend the 2017 MDE Fall School Improvement Conference for additional information related to the reporting process. For detailed instructions on submitting reports, please see the Resources section of the AdvancED/MDE website. Note that there are tabs for Schools, Districts, Quick Guides and helpful school improvement resources information.

Please contact our office if you need further assistance.

Michigan Department of Education Fall Conference

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is pleased to announce that Dr. Steve Perry, principal of Capital Preparatory Magnet School, author, and Education Contributor for CNN and MSNBC, will be our keynote speaker for the Fall School Improvement Conference on November 20, 2017 at the Lansing Center. Dr. Steve Perry’s heart pumps passion and produces positive change. Featured in CNN’s Black in America series, Dr. Perry is the most talked about innovative educator on the scene today.

Valuable and hands-on breakout sessions will be offered by schools, systems, Independent School Districts, MDE and AdvancED Michigan.

On November 21, 2017, Dr. John Almarode, from James Madison University Center for STEM Education Outreach, will present “Teaching Children in Poverty: What Works Best in Teaching and Learning.” Dr. Almarode continues the focus on how to engage students living in poverty that Dr. Eric Jensen shared last fall. Dr. John Almarode has worked with schools, classrooms and teachers all over the world. John began his career in Augusta County, Virginia, teaching mathematics and science to a wide-range of students. Since then, he has presented locally, nationally, and internationally on the application of the science of learning to the classroom, school, and home environments. He has worked with hundreds of school districts and thousands of teachers in countries as far away as Australia, Canada, England, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, South Korea, and Thailand.

Schools implementing Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) will share their experiences concurrently with Dr. Almarode’s presentations. He will present the same content in the morning and in the afternoon.
