Mr. David Derrick – 2013 AdvancED Mississippi Excellence in Education Award Winner

 David Derrick
AdvancED Mississippi proudly announces Mr. David Derrick as the recipient of the 2013 Excellence in Education Award. Mr. Derrick has demonstrated unparalleled leadership in promoting and advancing excellence in education. Mr. Derrick is being honored not only because he meets the criteria established by AdvancED, but because of his outstanding qualities and his personal and professional commitment to excellence in every area of his life.

Mr. Derrick’s professional career demonstrates a common vision and mission for higher expectations among students, faculty and the education community.

David Derrick graduated from Copiah-Lincoln Junior College and went on to pursue a degree in medical technology at the University of Southern Mississippi but during his junior year opted to leave school and join the U.S. Marine Corps.

Upon his return home after completing a tour in Vietnam, David married Lynda Ezelle of Brookhaven, MS. He and Lynda moved to Clinton, MS where he enrolled at MS College and completed his bachelor’s degree in Education. In the summer of 1973 he was hired to teach and coach at Brookhaven Academy. David, with the encouragement of then Headmaster, John Gray, returned to Mississippi College to complete his masters in school administration.

In 1979, David accepted a position as Headmaster at Woodland Hills Baptist Academy where he also coached the Boys Cross Country Track Team which won the first Mississippi Private School Association (MPSA) Cross Country Championship in 1982.

After eight years at Woodland Hills, David accepted the Headmaster position at Hillcrest Christian School in 1987 and served there until taking the Director of Instruction position with MPSA in 1991. In 1993, after the retirement of MPSA Director, Don Souder, David was elevated to the Director’s position where he continued to serve until his retirement in 2013. He completed 40 years in education.

David demonstrates a record of significant and distinguished contributions to the education profession through his numerous publications and presentations. David has made a lasting contribution to AdvancED and the accreditation process. He has served on over a hundred External Review Teams as well as serving as an AdvancED Field Consultant and Lead Evaluator.

When asked about his experience with AdvancED and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI), David stated that his relationship with AdvancED and SACS CASI had provided him with the opportunity to expand boundaries outside the world of Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS). I can’t imagine not having met some of the great public school educators that I have had the privilege to work with on SACS CASI reviews.  Their insight and expertise as team members gave balance and perspective to many non-public school reviews. It’s about getting better!

David Derrick has not only done something “special” for students, he has done something special for education, the profession, and AdvancED and SACS CASI. It is for these reasons that the  AdvancED Mississippi Council recognizes him as an outstanding educator and will honor him with the AdvancED Excellence in Education Award at the AdvancED Mississippi Council meeting on May 8, 2014.

Six Million Surveys Completed in ASSIST™
More than six million students, parents and teachers have completed AdvancED surveys about the quality of their educational institutions. This represents a total of over 169 million ratings and open-ended responses that AdvancED has collected to questions about the experience stakeholders have had with their school or school system. The surveys are available to AdvancED accredited institutions for free through ASSIST (Adaptive System of School Improvement Support Tools)—AdvancED’s web-based school improvement system.

Surveys have been administered across the United States and around the world by public and private schools and school systems. The surveys are offered both online and in paper version and in multiple languages. Additionally, the survey content is customized for students, parents and staff at all grade levels. Analysis of their data by each institution yields a rich source of information and insights into the opportunities institutions have to improve and deliver high quality education that meets the needs and expectations of their constituents. If you haven’t done so, please login to ASSIST today to learn more and begin using the surveys.
