Groundwater Data Bank
Geoscience Australia has collaborated with the Bureau of Meteorology to make its groundwater hydrochemistry data available via the web-based mapping portal Australian Groundwater Explorer. Through the Explorer, policy makers, water managers, researchers, industry and local communities can access data collected as part of Geoscience Australia's work to support mineral and groundwater exploration efforts...read more

Scrapping Plastic Bags

Calls to ban plastic bags are gaining momentum after Coles and Woolworths announced they would phase them out. The supermarket chains recently pledged to stop providing single-use bags to shoppers within 12 months. Read more
However, a recent article in The Conversation argues that the move will not benefit the environment. The article says the supermarkets are simply trying to maintain their margins.

Notice to Qld Recycler

A tyre recycling operator, who reportedly has had two fires at his business in Brisbane's south, has been handed clean-up notices by authorities. The first fire broke out in December 2016, ABC reports, and last month the second fire broke out at the business premises in Rocklea last month...read more

REGULATORY UPDATES
SA Scraps Asbestos Waste Levy

There will no longer be a levy on the disposal of packaged asbestos waste as of 1 July. The waste levy has been removed to encourage people to dispose of asbestos waste safely at an approved depot or landfill. The individual facility operator’s fee will still apply. South Australian residents who have asbestos to dispose of should first contact their local transfer or waste depot for advice on specific disposal requirements.
NSW Illegal Dumping Strategy

The NSW Environment Protection Authority seeks your views on the draft NSW Illegal Dumping Strategy 2017-20 to support the Waste Less, Recycle More initiative. The consultation ends on 31 July 2017.
Contamination from Shooting Ranges

Following the discovery of contamination at the North Wangaratta Recreation Reserve in May 2016 EPA Victoria is currently undertaking a desktop assessment of potential environmental and human health risks posed by outdoor shooting ranges across Victoria. read more.

This is a milestone week for ALGA—stay tuned and we’ll tell you why in a few days.

Over the last week some of you may have had issues with our website, it is something to do with upgrades done by our website host, nevertheless I've been assured it is now fixed. Should the issue persist, apparently it is as simple as clearing your history. If only all problems could be solved like that!

Issue 51 of our member magazine CRONICLE is now in production. The magazine is getting a refreshed look...but my lips are sealed! The focus of this issue is "regional issues including drought, mining, CSG, AG, sawmills, dairy, aquaculture, and natural disasters". If you have something to share with other members please send your articles and other submissions to Sushil.

This time of year, apart from the lead up to our AGM and Awards, our events calendar is hectic. This week we have the Vapour Intrusion workshop in Tasmania; and don’t forget the workshop in Newcastle on Legacy Landfill Contamination. Additionally there are two branch events, one in Canberra on Clandestine Labs, and the second in Auckland on Groundwater Monitoring Technologies.
