All I Want for Christmas Is New Brake Pads

I’m dreaming of a — polite Christmas.

As we head into 2020, I’m nervous.

Pearce Godwin, the North Carolinian who heads up the national Listen First Project and who helped IEI earlier this year as we launched our Civic Conversations Series, keeps up with polling in the U.S. and reports some frightening numbers.

The latest installment of a poll called “Civility in America” shows that Americans have an average of 10.2 “uncivil” interactions a week. This year’s polls shows 93 percent of Americans believe incivility is a problem; 68 percent believe it is a major problem.

We’re looking for brief but compelling true stories about how the Internet—or lack of access to the Internet—has affected people in North Carolina in each of these areas: education, agriculture, health, and small business.

Has access to high speed internet changed your life, education, livelihood or business? Do you have a story that everyone needs to hear? Can you tell it in a really compelling way in front of a crowd? Apply today to tell your story to a statewide audience at the next Emerging Issues Forum on February 10.

Text, Talk, Future Piloted with Middle Schoolers

On December 5, Text, Talk, Future was piloted with middle school students for the first time. Three career-focused classes at Durant Road Middle School in Raleigh participated in the activity which guides small groups of students through a conversation about life after high school. Even though that seems far away for a middle school student, career exploration classes have become available in middle schools. As a teenager, thinking about your future can seem overwhelming, especially with parents, teachers and counselors. Text, Talk, Future takes some of the pressure off the students by having it as a conversation among their peers.

If you want to see how it works, text FUTURE to 89800.

Rural Faith Communities Peer Network Debrief

The Faith Team at IEI (Kylie, Ellen, and John) that directs the Rural Faith Communities at Anchor Institutions (RFCAI) program is always interested in helping others plan ahead. This is a friendly reminder to all faith communities that beyond the digital inclusion and technology forum in February, we have our faith leaders gathering in May in collaboration with our partners and friends, so be on watch for more information and a few surprises.
