Give
and Receive –
Please Consider Becoming a WMCA Mentor
|
The “Adopt-a-Clerk” Program
is designed to connect experienced clerks with new clerks. This 22-year old program has been very
successful due to its one-on-one contact and continues to be one of WMCA’s most
valuable programs. With continuous turnover in clerks around the state, we are
in need of experienced clerks to come forward to mentor new clerks.
As a mentor—you give:
-
Your
knowledge of a clerk’s duties.
-
Your
advice about the responsibilities of the office.
-
Your
support to let a new clerk know that he/she is not alone.
As a mentor—you receive:
-
The
satisfaction of helping a fellow clerk through the overwhelming first year of
their job.
-
Support
from the Mentoring Committee, including a Mentoring Manual to help you work
with the new clerk.
-
Points
toward a WCPC certification.
-
A new
colleague friendship and member of your clerk network.
Sabrina from City of Lake
Geneva said “As a brand new clerk it was
great that I had a contact that could answer questions. I really do think
the mentoring program is worthwhile … it gives new clerks a peace of mind that
there is someone out there willing to help.”
We need clerks from
cities, villages and especially towns throughout the state to volunteer as a mentor; there are too many counties that
currently have no one signed up.
Please visit the Adopt-A-Clerk page on the WMCA website to download and submit an
application.
If you have further questions regarding the
program, contact Nikki Elsen, Mentor Committee Chair, at elsenn@cityoflacrosse.org. Thank you!

Wisconsin
Municipal Clerks Association
2015 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner
Teri Lehrke WCPC
Clerk, City of La Crosse
|
The Wisconsin Municipal Clerks Association (WMCA) endeavors to honor one
of their members with the most prestigious award for a municipal clerk – the
Lifetime Achievement Award.
The recipient this year, Teri Lehrke exceeds the expectations of clerk
duties by leaps and bounds. She is noted
by Mayor Kabat for serving La Crosse citizens, elected officials and the general
public with the highest degree of professionalism, integrity, expertise and
responsiveness. Teri Lehrke is also acknowledged
for exhibiting a wealth of knowledge and information and holds in high regard
the standards associated with the administration of the duties of the Clerk’s Office. She is recognized for exemplifying good
government, open, honest and impartial elections, and is referred to as “the
caretaker of the City’s democracy.” She
has earned the respect and admiration of her peers and WMCA is very fortunate
to have benefitted greatly through the years from her contributions to its
members.
This honored Clerk was appointed Deputy City Clerk of La Crosse in 1985
and began her reign in 1993 as City Clerk; serving over 33 years in her
municipality. She has been a member of
WMCA since 1993. In distinction, she has
achieved the designation of Wisconsin Certified Municipal Clerk, and then
Wisconsin Certified Professional Clerk. Through the International Institute of
Municipal Clerks became a Certified Municipal Clerk and later received the
designation of Master Municipal Clerk.
Her levels of education not only benefitted personal growth for her and
her municipality, but also the members of the WMCA. The recipient has served on
and also chaired multiple WMCA Conference Committees and the New Clerk’s Class
Committee. Teri Lehrke, once again served as the La
Crosse Conference Chair for the 2015 35th WMCA Annual Conference in
August where over 400 clerks from across the state of Wisconsin were in
attendance.
Through the years she has attended over 25 conferences, spent 4 years of
her journey attending the Green Bay Institute as well as UW Green Bay advanced
education classes. Since 1993, our
prestigious Clerk spent numerous hours attending various sessions, classes,
seminars and webinars. She also assisted the Association by conducting Baseline
Chief Inspector training for 8 years.
Aside from professional success, this individual is a speaker for
various local organizations regarding election laws, voter registration, duties
of the City Clerk and contributes to a host of other community activities.

Did you see the email from your President earlier this week?

To: Municipal Clerks
From: Sandra Boettcher
President,
Wisconsin Municipal Clerks Association
I’m
sure by now that many of you have heard about the GAB Reorganization Bill Draft
which was released late last week. I would encourage each of you to read the bill
in its entirety very carefully and direct any of your comments to your local
legislators as well as members of the election committees in the State Senate
and State Assembly with a copy of your letter being sent to gab@wi.gov.
If you
don’t know who to contact or how, click on this link to the Wisconsin State
Legislature website. http://legis.wisconsin.gov/
Click here for the Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau which should help you
understand the changes which are being proposed.
