Message From the President
Jim Paul
Happy February and Happy Valentine's Day! HRMA is gearing up for the always exciting and informative Annual Legal Update Program on Wednesday, February 18th. We look forward to seeing you there.

I have been energized by the hard work of the entire HRMA Board and the Committee Chairs already this year. It takes a small army of dedicated and responsive volunteers to successfully plan and execute all of HRMA's programs, initiatives and goals each year. Click here to read more.

February 18th Annual Legal Update
7:30 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. Registration, Networking & Breakfast
8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. Keynote Presentation
9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Roundtable Discussions

Always one of the most popular programs of the year, the HRMA Annual Legal Update will begin with Lisa Van Fleet and Carrie Herrick from Bryan Cave giving the keynote presentation. Afterwards, the membership will have the opportunity to break into roundtables headed by a local employment law attorney. The tables will rotate after a 30-minute presentation on a variety of legal topics. Members will be able to hear a total of three different topics of their choice.

Keynote Presentation: Keeping Up With ACA (and DOMA): Tips for HR and Benefits Professionals
The impact of the Affordable Care Act ("ACA") on employers and their group health plans has never been greater. As the Employer Shared Responsibility rule takes effect, Benefits attorneys from Bryan Cave LLP will join us to share insight into employer's most frequently asked questions about ACA compliance, and to discuss the latest developments that have the potential to impact compliance efforts. In addition, they will address the most recent same-sex marriage legal developments as they relate to employer plans. Bring your questions!

This program has been approved for 3.0 hours of HR (General) HRCI Credit, and is eligible for 3.0 hours of SHRM Certification Credit.

About the HRMA Programs Committee

If you were to visit the HRMA website (which I hope you all do on a regular basis), you will find the following description for the Programs Committee:

Be a part of setting the HRMA educational agenda for the entire year! Volunteers are needed to develop topics, recruit speakers and coordinate logistics for the monthly programs each year. Obtaining HRCI recertification credit for both the PHR and SPHR levels is a criterion.

While this description is a great start, we could never summarize all that our committee does in three sentences. Our number one goal is to provide exciting and worthwhile programs to our members on a continual basis that we can also submit for recertification credit. The committee also tries to offer the quality programming that the membership has come to expect in a frugal and economical manner. Suggestions are always welcome for programs and speakers.

We are looking for a few volunteers who have some time to devote to the committee to help plan our next year of programs. Please contact us at hrma@hrmastl.org if you are interested.

NLRB's Ambush Election Rules Challenged by Business Coalition
On January 5, 2015, a business coalition made up of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States, Coalition of a Democratic Workplace, National Association of Manufacturers, and the National Retail Federation and Society for Human Resources Management have filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia seeking to vacate the NLRB's Final Union Election Procedures Rule. The Coalition asserts the Board exceeded its authority under the National Labor Relations Act ("the Act") when it amended its rules. It also alleges that the new rules are unconstitutional and violates the First and Fifth Amendments of the United States Constitutions. Click here to read more.
