Suggestions
for Depiction

Audiences are not always aware of the science, engineering and technology behind many products and services that they use on a daily basis. Consider these suggestions when creating your storylines that involve the influence of these fields on new inventions and advances:

Think about emphasizing the importance of science, engineering, and technology in our every day lives. You might show our dependence on the development of new products by portraying what it would be like to live without them. Who would want to go back to walking around carrying multiple CDs and a CD-player when we have access to iPods nowadays?

Consider introducing a character that, using science, engineering, and technology, creates a revolutionary invention that changes the way in which we communicate. For example, think of what the next equivalent of a cell phone might be and how we will depend on it to stay in touch with one another.

Perhaps you might introduce a concept mysteriously, as if it was a product that can only exist in a character’s imagination. Throughout your storyline, reveal how with the help of science, engineering, and technology, such product or idea can actually be brought to life. An example of this could be the act of cloning.

Did you know that scientists at the University of Texas in Austin are currently working on developing an invisibility cloak? Could you have ever imagined that one of Harry Potter’s handiest instruments could be manufactured in real life? With advances in science, engineering, and technology, this and many other seemingly fictional inventions have been brought to life!

The presence of technology in our lives is becoming more evident, and we are becoming more dependent on technological advances to perform daily routines. Inventions that only seemed possible in our imagination and that we saw in science fiction films, shows, and literature are making their debut into reality each day.

The career opportunities in these fields are endless, and we, as the entertainment industry, have the power to motivate more individuals to pursue them. By showing how many fictional ideas and inventions have been brought into reality through science, engineering, technology, we can build people’s interest in becoming involved in these fields and keep bringing more science fiction to life!

I can’t wait to see the amazing new, creative and useful inventions your characters create and use to make their worlds better!

Did you know?

As predicted by science fiction writers a long time ago, scientists have now developed cloning methods. Mice were the first to be cloned and now researchers have been able to clone cattle, sheep, cats, deer, dogs, horses, mules, ox, rabbits and rats – though why anybody wants to create more rats remains a mystery (Source).

If you live in Florida, California, Nevada, or the District of Columbia, soon you can use a driverless car! These three states and the District are laying down the groundwork for laws allowing driverless cars as early as 2017 (Source).

Using 3-D graphics technology very similar to the technology used to study the Space Shuttle’s external tank, The Wilson Sporting Good Company studied aerodynamics of golf balls to find the perfect size and amount of dimples for a golf ball surface in order to create the perfect amount of lift and drag – and we can hear golfers rejoicing (Source).

Research on nanoceramic materials has lead to the development of better delivery of cancer-fighting drugs as well as better hair-styling products! Nanomaterials are now used in flat irons, curling irons, brushes, hair dryers, and even nail polish (Source).

The spirit of Rosey the Robot Maid from The Jetsons, a robot that was programed to keep the house clean, now lives through the Roomba. This innovative, robotic vacuum is programmed to automatically perform its duties without any supervision. Who ever thought this would be possible twenty years ago?

Body scanners were once unimaginable and now, they are commonplace. You first saw them in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Total Recall and now you see them every time you go to the airport, where they are widely used for security practices.

The force behind these amazing advances is the rapid development of the fields of science, engineering, technology, and math. None of the advanced gadgets that we now have access to would have been brought to life without the dedication of the professionals in these three fields.
