AFP-HR Vision Statement

To be recognized as the premier fundraising resource for professionals to learn, collaborate and grow together for a vibrant Hampton Roads community.

President's Letter
Head Shot - 2017 Kenda Council 2

Greetings AFP-Hampton Roads Chapter Members,

I hope this newsletter finds you and your families staying well. Thank you for continuing to promote philanthropy in Hampton Roads during this challenging time!

Great news! Our AFP-HR Chapter recently received the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) Designation from AFP International. The IDEA Champion Designation recognizes those chapters who have accomplished many of the key objectives in our goal of advancing diversity. Thank you to our IDEA Committee, led by Jessica Johnson, for their commitment to increasing inclusion, diversity, equity, and access in the fundraising profession in our area.

Thanks! We were pleased to offer a second free online educational session to our members in April so we could get together virtually and share best practices for fundraising in the current environment. Thanks again to AFP-HR Chapter Member Patrick Belcher for hosting this session!

New ‘Out of the Box’ Events! Our Programs Committee has been busy planning exciting sessions for our members to attend virtually in May. AFP-HR will launch “Coffee Breaks” - informal, small group (no more than 10), information sharing sessions that are free to AFP-HR members. Members will pick the topic they are most interested in and join in a zoom session to learn more from peers in Hampton Roads. Sessions include topics such as: “Make Your Case,” “Anything but COVID,” “Post-COVID,” “Some Day Events,” “Recipes for Strong Donor Relations During Uncertain Times (you already have the ingredients!),” and “Life is All About Plan B.” There is even a session that offers a Virtual Walking Tour of the Virginia Zoo! These sessions will be led by AFP-Chapter members. Plan to register to join in on calls that would be of interest to you!

Let’s Gather Virtually and Learn! The Curtis Group will present their “Giving USA” Report to our AFP-Chapter again this year. Instead of presenting the report at a formal luncheon, we will host the event on zoom on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. This session will be free. Please register to attend this very popular session.

Help our Chapter! We are promoting AFP’s Annual Campaign called the “Be the Cause Campaign.” More information on the campaign can be found within the newsletter. I encourage you to make a gift of $5, $10, $20 or more - whatever you can do to help AFP. Remember, a portion of what we donate comes back to our chapter to help us host programs for our chapter! I appreciate your consideration and hope you’ll join me in supporting AFP!

Please take a moment to read through this month’s newsletter. Thank you for your continued support of our AFP Chapter!

Keep up the good work,

Kenda G. Council
2020 President, AFP-HR

Your gift to BE the CAUSE will make a difference and support the ongoing and important work of the nonprofit fundraising community.

THANK YOU!

May Virtual Coffee Breaks
coffee break

Coffee Breaks are open to AFP members only and limited to up to 10 participants per coffee break. Several topics are offered more than once to facilitate smaller conversations.
Members should pick the topic they are most interested in. We ask that members register for no more than two sessions to allow as much membership participation as possible. If you are unable to attend a coffee break that you register for, please cancel your RSVP through our website immediately so it can be offered to other attendees.

Discussions will be facilitated by members of the AFP-HR Programs Committee. Zoom links will be sent to registrants one day before the event.*

*Registrants for the Zoo Walking Tour will receive the Zoom information immediately upon registration.

Enhanced Charitable Giving Incentives

The CARES Act offers enhanced charitable giving incentives which may be of interest to your donors. Please find the below highlights from a recent AFP post:
• Temporary Universal Charitable Deduction—Taxpayers who do not itemize their deductions can take a one-time deduction of up to $300 for gifts made to charitable organizations, or $600 for those married, filing jointly.
• 60% AGI limitation suspended for individuals’ charitable contributions for the year 2020 - Typically, individuals can only take a charitable deduction of up to 60% of their AGI, no matter how much they give. For 2020, there is no limit, making cash contributions fully deductible.
• Cap increased on how much corporations may deduct for charitable gifts from 10% of taxable income to 25% - In addition, the limitation on deductions for food donations by corporations increases from 15% to 25% in 2020.
• Required minimum distributions (RMDs) for 2020 waived from retirement plans - Any minimum distributions from retirements plans that would have been required in 2020 can be delayed until 2021. This change reduces the incentive for donors to make gifts from their individual.
