AFP-HR Vision Statement

To be recognized as the premier fundraising resource for professionals to learn, collaborate and grow together for a vibrant Hampton Roads community.

President's Letter
Head Shot - 2017 Kenda Council 2

Greetings AFP-Hampton Roads Chapter Members,

Our AFP-HR Board members have been busy calling our AFP Chapter members! They have enjoyed getting to know our members better and finding out how we can improve your chapter experience! If you haven’t yet received your call, be on the lookout for it!

Additionally, please take time to complete the member survey created by our IDEA Committee that will be emailed to you in the near future. We will use results from this survey to guide our chapter initiatives. We appreciate you taking time to complete the survey!

I hope you are making plans to join us for our Fundraising Leadership Symposium scheduled to take place virtually on Tuesday, August 18 from 9:00-11:30 a.m. The 2020 Symposium will feature Kim Ades with Frame of Mind Coaching. The Symposium will feature the topic: “How Top Leaders THINK During a Crisis.” Registration is still open! Encourage your peers to register as well!

As the fall approaches, we are making plans for exciting events for our chapter. Please save the date for Tuesday, September 15th at noon for our discussion, Gaining Insight into Donor Diversity. Our panelists will discuss ways fundraisers can engage and cultivate relationships with donors from diverse backgrounds. The discussion will be moderated by Vivian Oden, Vice President for Special Projects with the Hampton Roads Community Foundation. Read more about the program and register below!

While we will not be hosting our traditional National Philanthropy Day Celebration in November, our NPD committee has been making plans to celebrate the spirit of philanthropy in Hampton Roads during the pandemic. Stay tuned for more information to come soon!

I look forward to “seeing” you at all our exciting upcoming events! Until then, stay safe!

Keep up the good work,

Kenda G. Council
2020 President, AFP-HR

IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access)- SURVEY

 July IDEA article pic

As mentioned in the last AFP Hampton Roads e-news, the IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access) Committee is conducting a survey seeking demographic data from our chapter’s members that will be used as part of a larger metric-driven project. The results of this data collection project will be used to drive discussions and action items as we work toward our strategic plan goals as a chapter. We hope this information when compiled, will lend itself to discussions within multiple chapter committees and serve as a meaningful, ongoing response to suspected shortfalls in representation within the profession.

Please click the link below to answer this brief 10 question survey. Responses are completely anonymous and will only be used to better understand our chapter.

The subgroup working on this project invites anyone interested to join. While this is a project that will continue to take shape over time, we are excited to get started and look forward to the challenge, and conversations, that will follow. If you’d like to join the group working on this project, please feel free to contact Jessica Johnson at jessicaj@petaf.org

Government Relations

Call to Action for AFP HR Members:
• Let your organization’s voice be heard with elected officials as it relates to the important work you are continuing to do despite complications during COVID-19. This also offers an opportunity to engage board members. Perhaps your organization should consider the establishment of a Political Action Committee, if you don’t already have one.
• Support AFP IDEA – Diversity and Inclusion by supporting modifications to policy or lawmaking to support social inequities.
• Consider a contribution to AFP’s Political Action Committee.
• Commence preparation for the 2020 election – initiate contact with current elected officials, identify your key points, engage in conversation, and encourage others to do the same.

Contact Serena Amerson, CFRE, Government Relations Chair with questions – 757-961-2015.
